Elite VR

How do you use Elite VR? I have it through Steam. But how does it actually work? If I put the HMD on then I get a space but it is not a Steam VR space. How do I start ED in VR?

What head set do you have?

The starting method is always the same from steam:
- Install Steam VR
- Connect headset
- start Elite via steam and select "Start with SteamVR"

Put on your headset and enjoy :)

Start Elite Dangerous in your library, Steam will ask how you wish to run it. The Frontier Load screen will eventually start up and immediately kick off EDH in VR mode.

There are also params you can add to Elite Dangerous in your Steam library. Right click and go to Properties. In Launch Options use /vr to start in VR mode. Also if playing EDH only, suggest using /autostart and /edh as well. This is for when starting from desktop icon.

In game options / graphics settings, you should find a "3D" item, which should have options for VR, either with headphone or speaker audio.

Ok I got to play for 5 mins. It seems so complicated to just try and run horizons from steam VR. It launches Odyssey all the time no problem but I cannot seem to change the launcher to horizons section instead of odyssey. I cannot shrink the launcher or select horizons using the controllers. It just wont let me. But I did it earlier I am sure.

So help me get to grips with Steam VR and EDH please.

Try this:

Start SteamVr
Go to the folder where ED is installed
Start launcher EDLauncher.exe manually

You should be able to select horizons and that should start in VR then.

tried that but it requires a log in and I dont know what creds to use. FYI Edlauncher starts fine no problems and I can see the choices available but I simply cannot press horizons with my controllers they pop up a keyboard but I cannot select horizons.

OK I figured out that you have to access the desktop from the SteamVR app and not from the os VR. Then you can select horizons and it loads fine however................now I cant play in pancake either Odyssey or Horizons! I get a small window appear and the game loads but it is not fullscreen. help!

If I peep through the very small window that loads I can resett my graphics options to borderless and 4k and 120HZ etc again and it all becomes normal again.

But It means that I have to do a lot of faffing around to get VR to work in both EDO and EDH and then redo my settings to allow pancake modes to work in EDH and EDO.

Any ideas anyone?

I dont want to mess around with a third party tool when the solution should be that it all just works without all this hassle. I will look at the tool and thanks for it. But I wasted 3 hours this evening trying to get back to where I started the day. For some reason now my graphics settings are changing when I run VR and this is no good.

if it loads in odyssey just quit out and use the frontier launcher (which does not close on its own at least for me) to change to horizons hit play and viola it will start in steam vr, unfortunately the faff of changing to flat screen is still a thing. click on 3d in graphics options and chose what you want. as for screen resolution there seems to be little effect using the native resolution of your monitor

I play 99.9..% in VR. Sometimes I dropped to pancake to do screenshots, because the free cam was locked in VR. Once you get VR up an running properly, which is hard in Odyssey, you'll probably never go back to pancake.

What I did was to start the game from Steam. Then Exit to the Launcher that was still running. Then start whatever version I wanted. I could not get the same performance in VR as I could in pancake, and low fps is much more a problem in VR. In Horizons VR is awesome, and I can run my Reverb G2 at highres and LOD at ultra. In Odyssey I can run pancake 4K at Ultra but (edit: in VR) I need to lower the LOD settings to a mix of Off to Ultra, trying to get most visual eyecandy while still keeping my fps above 45'ish. RTX 3070 and a Ryzen 3950x.

It is annoying that you cannot save setups in game, like the presets that is already there. You only have one option being "Custom". That's how it is with VR in ED. Not that it's okie, but I have a sneaky feeling it's gonna stay that way. Still, flying around in the Milky Way in your spaceship in VR beats anything else I've tried in VR by lengths. I consider HOTAS a must in VR btw. Once you've trained your muscle memory (30-500 hours), you and the spaceship/Universe become one. That's magic :alien:

yes you definitely have to use the steam vr desktop button and not the controller desktop button. Then it works perfectly.

I play EDH and EDO multiple times nearly every day. My pimax uses steam VR to run.
Very first time I ran it (ages ago - I'm a power player) it started in normal pc screen. Go to ED display menu and set to VR. That's it.
After that, before starting ED make sure your headset is on. I always start EDH or EDO with the ED launcher (never with steam or any other launcher). Steam VR starts automatically as ED starts up. VR display displays the ED start screen. EDH or EDO works in VR every time - no faffin about ever.
