Elite Will Be My First VR Experience

Hi All,

I've decided ED will be my first ever VR experience when I get my DK2. It was going to be iRacing but I've changed my mind. I'm going to get the Rift connected and running. Load up the game and get into my spaceship without looking through it.

Finally, when I'm in my Sidewinder I'm going to pick up the headset whilst having my eyes closed. When it's all in position I'm going to slowly open my eyes and prepare to have my mind blown! Hopefully it's only a few weeks away. I can't wait. :D

I suspect you won't be the only one. ;) I would never have considered buying a VR system in all likelihood if ED had not come along.

Yes, as soon as I get my DK2 I'm releasing the kids into the wild and firing up ED.

Once I've got my DK2 setup, calibrated and working smoothly E: D will be the first game I try on it.

I'm not a VR virgin though as I had a tinker with a DK1.

Does it take much to calibrate?

That's just wrong. You need to keep the one that can best shop for you and hold pizza up while you eat it. I suspect a lot of player's children are called 'voice attack' and that is what they've been 'configuring' this whole time.

Well it's a Dev Kit so you can expect some faffing about to get it working perfectly.

You'll need to select the correct lens, work out what distance to set the screen at (the DK1 had (IMO Crappy) "screws" that you turned to bring the screen closer or further away from your eyes) etc.....

One thing you can do now in preparation is measure the distance between the pupils of your eyes in a mirror with a ruler.

There's a setup utility where you enter your height and IPD (the above measurement) and getting your IPD correct is important.

You may also need to faff around with screen rotation as the DK2 screen is a portrait screen (as it's a phone screen really) and your normal monitors are landscape.

Another consideration is launching stuff.
When I borrowed a DK1 I messed around with placing the desktop icons for game shortcuts in a certain place on my desktop so that I could see and select them when in VR. You loose a large amount of desktop that you can't see in VR currently so that takes a bit of tweaking.

Thanks, good to know.

Thanks for that.

Although I'm now getting very funny looks in the Office for disappearing into the toilet with a ruler in my hand and coming out muttering 66mm.....

:S They might be wondering what you were measuring!

Keep in mind that measuring your IPD this way might not be very accurate, and as IPD tends to be measured down to the mm - you can't guarantee that you aren't a mm or 2 out either way.

But it will serve as a rough estimate to put into the calibration and you can adjust.

Another thing to be aware of is the '3D Separation' setting in the Graphics options menu inside Elite. I need the slider all the way to the left, but after the recent 2.02 patch it had defaulted to being all the way to the right. I was unaware of this, and it meant that I was effectively going 'cross-eyed' when using the Rift as my eyes tried to focus on the images. Because the deviation is so slight you won't be able to see this (as I couldn't), and you won't feel your eyes are misaligned as it is by such a small amount. But after a while I started to get a mild headache, as well as started to feel eye strain.

When I removed the Rift, I had to blink a few times as objects in the distance had that 'double vision' effect. This only lasted a second or two until my eyes realigned.

So, this is an important thing to keep in mind...an incorrect IPD setting or having the separation set wrong inside Elite can get pretty uncomfortable.

Yeah, it's a starting point.
The rift utility that link I provided refers to has an IPD measurement tool. Not tried it myself as I don't think it was available when I had access to a DK1.
