A bit off-topic, but I must say that I blame Patrick O'Brian for spoiling me insofar as characterisation is concerned. I had to stop reading the latest book I was reading and actually go and re-read one of Patrick O'Brian's novels instead because of this same issue (check here). His writing also makes me realise that I will never be a great writer myself.
