EliteDangerous.exe a virus

Last night with the Odyssey patch through Steam, I updated the launcher to play. AVG then flagged elitedangerous.exe as an idp.generic virus and quarantined the file.

I had to restart the PC to get Steam to reinstall the files and AVG promptly did the same thing. Already annoyed by AVG by it's constant begging, I uninstalled AVG and installed the antivirus my wife uses, Avast. Restarted the PC to activate that, reinstalled the Elite launcher only for the same thing to happen again. (I realise now that AVG and Avast are basically the same thing.) I uninstalled Avast and turned Windows Defender back on, restarted the PC and then Steam told me it would take 4 hours to install the files instead of the 4 minutes it had taken previously, I guess Avast was more thorough. This morning it all works fine.

Discord users suggested it was worth flagging up as an issue though.

TLDR: AVG and Avast anitvirus both identify elitedangeorous as an idp.generic virus and delete the file.

I just checked and on my computer in the steamapps/common/EliteDangerous/products the executables are named EliteDangerous64.exe both in the base game and in the elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 directories. I too am using AVG and have done a virus scan since the install with no problems.

that's because they merged a while back there is no base game as such any more at least I think that's what happed:unsure:

more likely ED is being flagged as a false positive, makesure your AV has using the latest virus definitions and that there are no software updates. if you have Heuristics switched on within the AV then this can often report false positives, heuristics dosent look for viruses but virus like behaviour... as you appear to be running more than one AV on your machine, this will cause issues. if you dont trust one AV to give you piece of mind you would be better off running AV and the free malwarebytes antimalware

if the AV is still flagging ED then try running ED exe through VirusTotal.com, this will run the file through something like 20 AV databases. ran scan of mine and not one is showing any suggestions of a virus
