Elite's Alasdair Hibberd: "every single shot in this trailer is gameplay, absolutely nothing is pre-rendered in engine."

I don't doubt that it was in-game is they say so.
However, since those atmospheric effects look pretty graphics intensive, I'd also like to know
  • was it real time (i.e. did they render it at the framerate that was shown in the vid)?
  • if yes, what kind of hardware did they run on?

Safe to assume a pretty decent computer. Unless we are at the stage of suggesting devs should intentionally make release footage on mid-range PC? At the end of the day, its still marketing and therefore they want to make it look as good as possible.

Qualitatively agree - but I want quantitative. What core, what RAM, what GPU do I need for that performance?

Or specifically: can my 1080ti handle it in VR? (yes, I know that the on-foot parts of Odyssey are pancake-only, but flying the ship over a planet (and possibly riding the SRV) is supposed to be possible in VR with the improved graphics). Or will I need something like a 6800XT (provided they'll be available by the time Odyssey drops - and I won't be betting who will be first)? Or will Odyssey use RT and be optimized for NVidia?

Wait and see is the obvious answer. But considering how ED usually has nice graphics even on potato computers, i don't think you have to worry too much, especially with a 1080ti.

I think it's entirely possible min/req specs could change given the increased fidelity (though that depends a lot on optimisation and setting scale) so let's assume they do...

The 1080ti isn't nearly old enough for you to be concerned about whether it can easily handle Elite, which isn't an intensive engine whatsoever. Nothing in the trailer stood out in that regard. Definitely not to the point you should be worried. I mean, your card can push frames fine in CP2077. I doubt elite will require more.
