Empire progression question

Is it possible to continue gaining rank in the Empire to get a Clipper, without taking the Naval Ascension jobs of killing Gen this and Gen that?

And how do you do it?

Thank you.

Afaik, the mission progression is set, you must complete that kill mission to progress. Are you having trouble?

I don't know if you can avoid it either. I know some stations will offer different missions, but they might just be a different General.

A tip on the soon-to-come smuggling missions for you though :) Go to CD-51 102 and take the smuggling mission(s) there. Because the goods aren't illegal there and you wont get ruined from a failed smuggling mission. Someone gave me this tip and it helped a ton.

Also, once I hit Knight, it took something like 60 random mission completions before the next ascension to Lord. And then another 60 to 80 for the one to Baron. So be prepared for a grind :) These are not exaggerations as I still have my lovely notebook filled with trade goods needed. I also recommend trying like hell to avoid any USS (unidentified signal source) missions that you can. This is because it takes hours sometimes for your targets to spawn, and sometimes they do not. Also, your kills get reset often if an NPC updates your mission with an alt turn-in

Thank you for the great tips.

And how do you usually find the Generals, head for and hang out at the nav beacons or head for uss?

Do the delivery missions too within a core of 4-6 stations in Empire factions.
If your ship is large T7/T9/Conda etc swop out to a smaller T6 or ASP that way you do not need to worry if any are outposts and taking missions by accident you can't complete.
Good luck.

all mission goal must be found in USS's...

I recently ranked up to baron to buy a clipper, and the thing that got me through it quickly was realizing that you get the ascension missions much faster when you get your rep up with a lot of different Empire aligned factions. I would do missions for one until i just reached allied, then move to another system and do it again. Ranked from nothing to baron in 3-4 sessions of a few hours each. I worked systems that were surrounding(and including) CD-51 102 . that way if you get a fetch mission, you can just go there and grab whatever you need, as they have it all.(and a good shipyard)

Having trouble finding the General in Smethells 173.

I have been checking USS but no luck so far.

Is there a way to improve the odds of finding the right USS, like jumping into the system and then heading for the main station or the nav beacon or some other place?

Systems are big. :)

Thanks.

You just have to keep checking USSs. If you stay at the minimum supercruise speed (30km/s) and keep monitoring the system panel, you can encounter and drop into USSs without any fuss. They appear at regular intervals!

Is this the only way...you have to take those missions>

Is there an alternative ascension route?

Thanks

You have to reach the rank of Baron to buy the Imperial Clipper right now. That is the only way. You need to be allied with 10-12 individual cartels to get to this point reliably.

So to answer your question quickly, yes, Naval Ascension missions are the ONLY way.

I build a ship I call the "fetcher" and keep it around just for those missions. I'm not risking my high priced Asp or Imperial Clipper for that kind of stuff.

Here's the layout of the "fetcher"

[Hauler]

BH: 1I Lightweight Alloy
RB: 2D Power Plant
TM: 2D Thrusters
FH: 2A Frame Shift Drive
EC: 1D Life Support
PC: 1D Power Distributor
SS: 1D Sensors
FS: 2C Fuel Tank (Capacity: 4)

3: 3E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 8)
3: 3E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 8)
2: 2D Shield Generator
1: 1E Cargo Rack (Capacity: 2)
---
Shield: 46.28 MJ
Power : 5.25 MW retracted (73%)
5.25 MW deployed (73%)
7.20 MW available
Cargo : 18 T
Fuel : 4 T
Mass : 21.0 T empty
43.0 T full
Range : 31.18 LY unladen
18.13 LY laden
Price : 237,588 CR
Re-Buy: 11,879 CR @ 95% insurance

You can drop the shields and carry another 4T of cargo if you wish, but I find 18T is plenty to run those higher risk "go and fetch this" type missions....

Advancement missions for each rank are always the same type, though the specifics (system, name, commodity) differ.

As for running around in a fetcher ship, a Hauler is slower and more likely to run into trouble than an Asp or Clipper, not to mention the time spent buying or fetching it. Also, with the greater cargo space in a larger ship, you can easily hold enough common demands for several missions. I usually ignore delivery missions unless I'm heading that direction or for rank progression.

I'm talking about using the fetcher specifically for rank missions - the run this here or go get 6 of these from there and bring them here missions.

You can take a loaded Asp if you wish, but again, my style of play is more realistic. I'm not taking my Ferrari to hunting camp, and I'm not racing my F-150 on Track Day at Road Atlanta....

As a tip from someone who ranked baron recently, I was doing missions in Cartu/Velliep and nearby systems for all the Empire factions there. Did all the courier and delivery missions I could find and it took me less than a week (playing in the evenings) to get the Clipper. It was very easy, as basically every station I had to deliver something to, had two or three more missions for me to take. Do not - I repeat DO NOT - take the missions requiring you to hunt USSs - they are a complete waste of valuable time. I also ignored all missions that required me to buy a certain commodity, as that also slows the progress down.

I bought a cobra to do all of mine in. Can land anywhere and can shoot along with ferrying goods. If you have a permit to achenar you can take them a load of rares and bump up your rankings with them super fast and actually make money doing it.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all of the help. I am starting to get a good picture of what it takes. I really appreciate the time you have taken to reply.

Hey, sahib, what you mention is really interesting.

Are you saying that you did not do the kill the General mission or missions of that type at the USS points?

Thanks,

Islata

You have to take some of the USS missions for rank. It's not possible to go up in rank otherwise.

One thing I did notice the last time I got one of these kill General jobs was that during the fight allies waded in on my side so it was pretty easy.

Of course, I wasn't as clear as I should be. I meant all the "kill 3 pirates", "find and kill the menacing NPC-what's-his-name" and such missions, not the actual naval ascension missions. The latter are obviously required, the former are just a waste of time from my perspective, as it sometimes took an hour to spawn the right USS, and that whole hour could be better spent doing the right missions, actually progressing in reputation.
