Empire - ranking up

What do you have to do to get beyond Baron? I've been slaving away at Empire missions and killing enemies of the Empire, but no sign of the next rank progression mission. I've been "Allied" with Empire (general Allegiance as well as local Faction) for ages now. Is there something else I need to do?

Its pretty much random. Sometimes I get no ascension missions, next time I get 2 in a row from the same station.

Took me ages to get from outsider to serf, and then pretty quick to baron, but now I seem to be stuck there. I've been taking all the Rep Gain Empire missions I could find plus others given out by the local Empire faction but it's just more of the same every day, and not even a wee up-arrow next to "Allied" to suggest that I might be in favour. Wish there was some kind of progress bar for these things. Ah well, thanks for replying :)

no idea. I've been running trade missions in empire space for about two weeks, been Baron all that time

how the heck did you get allied with the Empire itself? for weeks ive been grinding rep, allied with several lower empire factions, and no matter how long i got a little blue arrow next to empire rep, im permanently neutral to them :/

I wonder if being in the clipper stops them giving you missions? A bit like being in a clipper stops you from using your mass to stop someone from frame shifting...

I'm allied with 4 systems, friendly to the empire, my home base I have 91% influence with and has the expansion note under influence. Earlier tonight I posted a mish popped up that gave me viscount. As of now I got 2 missions in a row, go kill 2 more Generals. One at a trading system and the other at an independant system my main is trying to expand into. Who knows how this frakkin thing proceeds.
I doubt it's the clipper as that's my trading ship, they should be more afraid of my Asp, fully kitted and worth 38 mill. :) UPDATE:
The 2 general missions were for just 1 upgrade in rank, seems as I did not finish it when I had 1, it offered me another mission again.
