Empty squadron, how do I take it over?

I assume you mean that you can't use that squadron name for your own squadron because it's been claimed by a squadron with zero members?

There shouldn't be any "empty" squadrons, they should disband when the last member leaves. So raise a support ticket and get Frontier to remove it, I guess.

In the system Sowiio Third Guard are a player faction and there is no squadron listing in game for Third Guard, I am unable to join them from game or Inara. Having left a squadron I wanted to take over Third Guard as I like the system.

Not all player factions have squadrons, and not all squadrons are linked to player factions. And each faction could have multiple squadrons pledged to it.

IIRC, there's nothing stopping you from creating your own squadron, and nothing stopping you from becoming allied with a player faction (which behaves like any other faction when created). Once allied, you can pledge your squadron to the faction.

I don't know what PMF stands for but I think you are correct, Sowiio has a player faction Third Guard, sorry for the wrong terminology.

My previous squadron had a home system, they are native in that system in the same way Third Guard are native in Sowiio, I want the native bit as I'm on my own and I only want Sowiio.
Let's assume I create my own squadron. How do I ally myself with a player faction? Having looked through the squadron creation page in game I'm a little bewildered how to make the steps provided by Nadreck happen.

Any player can create a Squadron, if they can afford the fee. The player can affiliate their Squadron with any Faction - even a Player Minor Faction (PMF) inserted at the request of a player group they are not associated with or a member of. The player group has no control over which Squadron(s) affiliate with the Faction.

Affiliating a Squadron with a Faction does not confer ownership of the Faction, or any form of control over the Faction, to the Squadron.

You can pledge your squadron to any faction (either a player-created faction or one of those initially placed by Frontier), if you are allied to them. You can only pick one faction for your squadron, however.

You work up to Allied (from Neutral, then on to Cordial, then Friendly, then Allied) by gaining reputation points with them. Run missions for them with REP rewards (the more plusses, the better). If they are the controlling faction at a station, you also gain reputation by handing in cartographics data or trading with them.

or redeeming their bountie vouchers...

bounty voucher and trade are capped to 15% reputation per transaction, so you need 5+ for getting allied.

you get that 15% rep for 225K bounties for an independent faction. so redeeming 5 times bounties of Third guard >225K + 1 time some more will get you allied.

as the faction in question does not control a station or market, you can't use trade or exploration data here.

Didn't know that either. :)
Numpty moment time... Upon exploring the Squadron creation page a little further, I discover there's a relationship between the Allegiance you have selected and the factions displayed, soooooo, not realising this before and knowing I were allied with way more factions than shown I was little confused. :D
Thankfully to explanations here and poking around, I'm good, if I choose to walk this path I know what I'm doing now.
Thank you people. :)

Splendid, thank you for explaining that for me Nadreck. :)

Hi Ooj,

That's a huge system with a lot of traffic. In a very large population system such as this (8.2 billion), much more effort will be required to have any significant impact, than in a smaller system. If you're a single CMDR you might find it extremely hard - maybe impossible - to take control of the system or any assets in it. (There are also a lot of Stations.)

The other aspect is, it's within a Power Play sphere which means the system and it's faction are likely to be [seemginly] randomly targeted by Power Play player groups for 'reasons'.

I'd suggest reconsidering your target faction and system. However if you really want to attempt this, consider getting in touch with a Zemina Torval player faction. Third Guard are a favourable government type for Torval, which means they might be willing to help you out in taking control of the system or some of it's assets.

o7 and good luck.
