It should be in the "Options, Graphics, 3D" it is a scroll down menu with HMD Low, HMD Mid and HMD Ultra, under the normal Low Mid and Ultra setting.
As long as Oculus Home is running with "unknown sources" enabled, you do not have to get a key or download steam to enter vr.
It may be the HMD options only show if Oculus Home is running.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't do that, it takes over your E D completely and downloads a whole new installation of E D - over 13GB.
I have Oculus running, in the Oculus display, it says "EliteDangerous is taking an age to load" - words to those affects. Under Options -> Graphics -> I've chosen the appropriate HMD quality option.
I really don't want to install the Steam version if I don't have to.

further to my previous post oculus home is not running when i took this screenshot so i was mistaken there, apology, i just select HMD Headphones when i want to play in vr.
Do you have unknown sources enabled in oculus home, even though oculus home it is not running it may be relevent.

Thanks! It was HMD Head phones that I needed to select.

Welcome to Elite in VR, OP. Consider yourself lost in space now... lost in space with a lot of fun and awe incoming. I´ve been playing ED for 2.5 years now and since June last year, i play in VR exclusively.
VR actually made me drop playing any game except Kerbal Space Program on a monitor, because the experience is so much more than playing in 2D... Prepare yourself to buy fancy controllers and input devices next

Are you able to clarify this a little bit please?
So if you have the ED already installed and now have the Rift?
To run the game with the Rift?:-
- Ensure "Oculus Home" is running with "unknown sources" enabled (somehow/somewhere). Are you able to clarify where/what this setting is?
- Run ED as per normal and set its 3D grahics to "HMD xxxx"? Do you need to restart the game then?
- Done? It will now display on the Rift?
To run the game without the Rift?:-
- Disable the 3D graphics from "HMD xxxx"? Do you need to restart the game then?
- Done? It will now be back on your monitor again?

This issue was resolved.
No it wasn't, because I just asked it... ie: To clarify for myself...
Just seeing if my understanding of the matter is correct/wrong.
So... For anyone in the know have I understood?:-
ps: I have a friend battling to get ED running with his Rift hence the interest...
