Enable Rift / HMD

How do I configure Elite Dangerous to use the Rift? I have the PC download version from Frontier.

I don't see an HMD option ,

Thanks

It should be in the "Options, Graphics, 3D" it is a scroll down menu with HMD Low, HMD Mid and HMD Ultra, under the normal Low Mid and Ultra setting.
As long as Oculus Home is running with "unknown sources" enabled, you do not have to get a key or download steam to enter vr.
It may be the HMD options only show if Oculus Home is running.
Hope this helps.

Since he said download version from Frontier, I think he means this:
In the options menu/ graphics settings go right beside the 3D+ itself and click tp expand. Choice will be hmd(speakers), hmd(headphones), anaglyph, side by side and off. probably says off now

Didn't they remove that from the options in a patch?

If so the fastest way to launch is a modded shortcut or external launch tool. Official way is to generate a partner key on the frontier site and redeem it in the oculus software.

As I mentioned elsewhere, this results in Oculus Home downloading and installing a complete new installation (over 13GB) of E D - it also "takes over" your existing E D installation(s) and forces VR when you launch them. I had to uninstall Oculus to get control back. There may be a way to run E D normally but I I never found it, when I re-install I shall look for the HMD option in E D graphics options method.

Didn't know it takes over the regular installation, my steam installation still launches in normal non vr mode.

You can run the game in normal mode from the oculus software btw (rightclick start in desktop mode).

If I start through steam I don't see the option hmd under 3d. Starting in steamvr mode works, but seems to run/look slightly worse.

In case you're still struggling with this ...

You probably need to do this for a Frontier desktop shortcut to ED ...

You'll also have to go into the ED graphics settings and set 3D to "HMD headphones" or somesuch.

I'd also recommend getting drkaii's EDProfiler which makes messing around with graphics settings and switching between VR ED and non-VR ED really easy to do.

If you have the steam version of Elite it doesn't show up. I had to just browse to the Elite folder inside of steam apps and run the launcher directly to bypass steam. Once I did that the option showed up under 3d. Also maker sure the Oculus software is set to allow outside apps as mentioned by others and make sure the Oculus software is running before you launch Elite.

I am having real issues coming to terms with this, with Oculus installed every time I run E D (any commander) even with the 3D setting to OFF - oculus app opens and if I close it then the Elite client shuts down. Much as I like the sense of space in E D with the Rift, I don't think I can get used to using it all the time (I am trying to get used to the visuals but not there yet) so I really want to run E D in 2D mainly and use the rift for some of those amazing things like the ISS.

So my question is, does the EDProfiler get around this? I think you elsewhere said about it using batch files to start and stop processes?

he ED Profiler does not get around this. But there is an easy solution to this. Open text editor and copy these lines:

sc config OVRService start= demand
net start "OVRService"
if %errorlevel% == 2 net stop "OVRService"

save it as OVR.bat and place it on your desktop.

right click it and run as adminitrator. When the OVR service is running it will shut it down and vice versa.

I didn't think you'd like it. Personally, monitors are dead for gaming for me now.

I shall have a go at that, thanks very much.

I really, REALLY didn't (don't) want to prove you right on this. ;)

I have not given up on it, I expect that with time I will grow more accustomed to it in E D but it blows me away in some of the other things. It is the visual sharpness / acuity (don't know if I am describing it right) that is causing me issues in E D. I find things off-centre blurry so I have to move my head, not my eyes and that sort of spoils it so far. Scale is amazing, really the feel of actually being there is for sure really great. Unfortunately if feels to me as though I am "being there" but with an eyesight problem. ;)

Funnily enough the ISS for example didn't seem to suffer from this lack of sharpness off-centre so whether that is just my imagination, coming from a 1440 resolution, pin-sharp monitor in E D whereas in the ISS I am coming at it fresh.

I made my travel to colonia purely in 2D, watching online streams on a second monitor. No neutreon highway used, 21ly jumrange python, old school. 2D isn't dead it fits a nice niche.

Agreed. I explore in 2D as navigation in my Vive is problematic. For all else I'm on the Vive.

Monitors also make for a happy marriage. When you block out the missus visually and aurally for several hours, there is often a violent reaction.
