Encrypted Data Storage Salvage Operation

I've been reading the manual, doing youtube, google, but now after 3 days still can't find a way to complete a simple Encrypted Data Storage Salvage Operation? The key bindings mentioned in the training don't work or have any affect. Tried fixing that, but have no idea what those terms within options for key bindings mean, so how do I set something unknown? The mission target or something on my left panel showed in youtube does not show on my panel. It shows up in blue in every answer I could track, but not in mine? Found video's directing me to scanning Nav Beacons to get past this. New problem...can't get the ship to scan such a beacon and no reaction from any keys. So I exit the game to pause(says RESUME) and go to youtube once more. Upon getting back I find my fuel empty even though I've just filled up and did only this one jump for about 60Ls! So my ship blows up and I get Detention as a reward. No explanation here either? Once again the training video is of no help here? Figuring something out is fun for only so long! Nothing is explained to even the slightest extend? Youtubers that do put something out use terms and jargon unfamiliar or there scenario is different from mine which puts me back to square one once more. Clueless! Please can somebody at least render a clue to where to start, but please use the June 2020 version for referencing...

Exiting the game in the way you did doesn't pause the game, it's an always on game. That's why you ran out of fuel. No idea why you got a bounty and sent to a detention center, sorry. Make sure you exit to the main menu or desktop, then you are out of the game safely.

Scanning the nav beacon is the most reliable way to make mission targets register. They will sometimes show up without, but you want to know how to do it anyway. When you enter a system, you are in supercruise, select the Nav Beacon from the left HUD nav panel and fly to it. When you get to it, drop to normal space. You need to scan the actual nav beacon, not its HUD marker. Easiest way to target it is probably to go to the left HUD Contacts panel and select it there. To scan it, simply point your ship at it (once targeted) and it will scan passively. You can see the progress in the bottom left target info panel.

Once you have done that, a mission specific signal source should show up in the left HUD nav panel. If the signal source is a long way away it might be a body that is highlighted, and once you get to within 1,000 Ls the signal source itself should show up.

Edit - This is the way to find any mission target that uses the signal source mechanic, such as pirates to assassinate (they will usually find you anyway), massacre missions any salvage mission, hostage missions...

Ok, take this down one point at a time - paragraphs would have helped a bit, too.

First of all, since your question isn't really PC specific, it would have been better off in the Newcomers section of the forum (not that important, pretty mmuch the same people hanging out in either place).

Next, screenshots, screenshots, screenshots. Of your left HUD with the mission (from the transactions tab) and the contacts tab.

Scanning a nac beacon is doine automatically - once you've targeted the actual beacon (white marker) and not the nav point. That one's a bit confusing for a lot of newbies.

Then: the game has no pause. You're in an MMO, the Galaxy and everyone else ticks on while you are AFK. Your ship is only safe when you exit (main menu or desktop) or dock at a station (or carrier, since last week).

Where to start - well, have you done the ingame tutorials? As for YT videos, there are hundreds out there. How should I know which one you are referring to when you talk about "the" training video?

Allow me to suggest you the following:
0. Read all the mission-related content on the Transaction tab displayed on your ship's left panel;
1. Use your ship's right hand-side panel to select a button to use the discovery scanner;
2. Use the discovery scanner as soon you arrive on the designated system (that's called "honk");
3. Drop at the Beacon (if present on the designated system), target it and wait for it to finish download the system data;
4. You shall be prompted with further information from the mission giver. Proceed following instructions received.

Cheers!

Sorry about the PC thing. Picked this section since I thought it related to pc keys and play methods and since I'm on a pc I thought it would relate to me?
Now for some more questions to clarify what you've said? White marker? I can only find the Nav Beacon? There is nothing els? The screenshots is what I have.

Thank you, this was so far the most helpful. I discovered how to "empower" the discovery scanner, but can still not find anything to get it to scan or work? Nothing happens passively like some are suggesting or am I at the wrong location? I checked keybinding menu too, but don't see "discovery scanner" there? Sorry, I must be the absolutely dumbest player ever, but I've always played adventure games and this is a whole new direction for me.

The discovery scanner can only be activated/binded on your ship's right side panel under "fire groups" where you shall choose a button to trigger/use it. Press and hold to honk.

On one of your pictures you're at the Nav Beacon, but you are targeting the signal source. To target and download the data from it you should find the actual thing which will be presented as one of the white squares on yours dashboard radar. Press "T" to target it (default key)

Ok, this should be easy - you're running basically against the same problem a lot of other people do. What you have targeted is the navigation marker, which is a non-material object marking apoint in space. What you need to target instead is the physical satellite, confusingly also called "Nav Beacon".
If you look at your radar, I would guess it should be this marker:
nav_beacon.jpg

It's the only one that's white when you enter the beacon (navigation marker), the others are high wakes of the ships that have been there. Might also be the one below on the left.
You can also tab right in your left HUD to the "Contacts" panel and select the Nav Beacon you will find there. Once selected, point your ship at and you'll see the spinny thing in the target display (left side of your radar, where it now says "Pilot's Federation...."). When it stops spinning, you'll get a popup telling you that the system data has been downloaded. After that, get back into supercruise. Check the "Navigation" tab on your left HUD again and you should see a signal source marked in blue as mission target (for some reason, signal sources only show up on the Nav panel while you're in supercruise 🤷‍♂️).

Thank you for your help. I finally got it! The targeting of the Nav marker and not the beacon is not actually the newbies' fault I think. I watched a couple of videos to this regard and they all depicted the Nav marker when they explained about scanning the beacon for info! Doubly misleading I would say?
You telling me about the radar thingy on the dash was actually the big break through! I thought it just part of the special effects on the ship although I read quit a bit about the ship and it's devices. But thank you for you guys' input. I feel the game is starting to shape for me now....

Then this might help, too:

In addition, there are white and what I suppose should be grey markers (I can't distinguish them unless I'm in the cockpit and see both): white for unmanned objects like satellites/beacons and missiles, grey for wake signals.
A dozen white triangles approaching fast is usually a bad sign :cool: .
