End of the Road II

OK, it's not Germanium this time and Chiggy will be glad to hear he will not have race across the galaxy to rescue me (eternal thanks, by the way!) - but I am deep in the outer rim slowly pottering back. Nothing exciting, to be honest. Today, however after a long break due to holidays and other commitments, I logged in only to find that the old Lakon Type 6E was nose down in high orbit over a small planet. I had left her parked there while I retired into a long cryo-sleep to rest but as far as I remember, I had parked her nose to the horizon. Not bow down.

Then something very odd happened. I saw that my thrusters were off-line. I had no control and was piloting a dead stick. In the module panel I saw that the thrusters were off-line so I hit the active button. Nothing happened. I hit it again - and again nothing happened. Now this was very strange. The thrusters were at about 90% integrity so just to cover the bases, I repaired it using the AFU. Still nothing.

In frustration, I exited the game and fired up my alt-account 'Hated Nightfall' near Maia. Everything was fine with the Keelback XE but to be sure I piloted the 'Wilderness of Tigers' into Oblivion Station. All good.

Right, then, I decided I must have missed something simple and went back to re-awaken Felix up. Sure enough, the Lakon was bow down and dead in the water. So to really do a deep systems check, I decided I would go through all the panels and menus to see if it was just the activate-thruster one which was not working. Without thinking, I brought up the SRV panel and on a whim hit deploy SRV . . .

The following video was all I had time to capture as what followed was panicky and a bit of a head-rush, to be honest:

Close the game and start the non-horizons version. It will put you back to your ship, in orbit hopefully. Not sure what will happen with the SRV.

Edit: I should have waited until seeing the rest of the video. :(

How far out are you? Will you need the SRV?

I think it's worth giving support a call. You shouldn't be able to launch the SRV unless you had landed. Show them the video and I reckon they may restore your SRV.

Yes - just opened a ticket now. I do need the SRV as I am about 8000 ly from Beagle Point 2. I can understand that the thrusters offline was a bug but how in hell did I manage to launch the SRV in orbit???

I think that's also a bug. Perhaps what happened was that the game thought you were landed. Hence why you couldn't turn on the thrusters because when landed they turn off automatically and they can't turn on. Just a thought: if this happens again, try to hold the up thrust button up as if you were taking off and see if the thrusters come back on again.

Nevertheless, one bug or two, this is a result of a malfunction. I think support will help you.

Rhea - that makes sense. Damn - I wish I had thought of that before inadvertently launching myself into an orbital drop.

Very common on small planets and moons, i had a 12km drop the first time it happened to me. Figured it out in the end, just follow the takeoff procedure as if you were grounded.

What an amazing free fall ;)
What velocity was it recording as the SRV fell? I can't see in the video.
That first bounce was incredible! And not very realistic even for low gravity.

I am sure Support will sort this out for you and this story will be a useful lesson for the rest of us.

Excitement?!?!?! I've had enough to last a lifetime here . . . I didn't realise this was a known bug. It is something I have never come across before - and I have parked in orbit many times as it always gives you a nice when when you log back in (especially in VR!).

Fingers crossed, Chiggy - although without the SRV now, I am eager to head back as I will not get distracted by mountain-climbing now, I suppose . . .

Orbital drop?

Express elevator to hell... GOING DOWN!!! :D

BTW I reckon I am about 4 kylies behind you if you need a hand??

OK so I had to add this...

Game over, man, game over! Thanks for the offer, GunnerBill - I am heading straight back into the core now and then over to Colonia. Without the two SRVs (I lost the first down a deep gulley a few months back), I can't mine jump mats or climb mountains. There's little point in staying out here now.

The upside is that this is finally giving me the spur to head back rather than pottering about out here. I left with the DWE and am still only about 8000 kylies on my way back from Beagle Point 2. This has forced my hand now.

True, Alec - and thanks for adding my last 'adventure' into that section! I never got round to thanking you for that. It's funny how both my accounts in Elite Dangerous now have had low-orbit SRV adventures. I think I may be cursed . . .
