I have been ogling that game.
Did you play it?

The first one was on my list too. Never found the time to buy and play it.

It's on my list, i played all the endless games so this one is a clear buy from my side, pretty hyped.

Is this:

Nails hard to understand?

A bit like the civ series?

Requires ridiculous amounts of time to get most out of it?

Will try it out most probably this weekend.

Although I always favored the Galactic Civilizations series as my all time favorite space strategy game, I also liked Endless Space.

Always loved games from Endless series. They're just...different. Endless Legend in my eyes beats any Civ game out there. Also important to notice the visual style of these games and setting, which is unique and so beautifully crafted.
Endless Space 2 is definitely on my list to purchase.

After dipping my toes in it for a (very) little time, here's my (very initial) first impressions:

- The game is very complex, more so than its predecessor, yet the UI is quite good and helps understand what's going on. Also being turn based, gives you time and peace to look at all the stuff calmly. Also, there are automation tools that will help you when your empire starts to get big.
- Spekaing of big, the game punishes you heavily if you stretch your empire far too much.
- Speaking of UI, its very fluid and pleasant.
- Tech tree is still very big, but this time the UI does a better job than ES1 at showing you exactly what you get from each tech.
- Each race poses its own quite different challenges, some are very different from each other in the way they travel, colonize, etc.
- It seems to rely more on resource extraction than its predecessor.
- There a whole new political layer to add even more depth.
- Travelling is still done by "pathways" between star systems. No a great fan of it, I prefer the free movement of Galactic Civilizations series, but I can live with it and many games in the genre use this system.
- There are special individuals, "heros", which give additional buffs depending on what you use them for. Not a fan of this, but there are people who like it.

Its a game that will eat many, many hours from turn based 4X space strategy games, for sure. And if you're into it, it will be leisure time well spent.

Good review, I agree with your evaluation, the learning curve is very steep, but once you get there the view is marvelous :D

I wish I had time for a game like this. Seems very deep and interesting but I can see what would happen. It would go on the hard drive and maybe it might an hour a night for a week or 10 days, soon after uninstalled because I haven't got the time to properly appreciate the depth of the mechanics.

Oh well only another 20 years to retirement.
