Enemy fighter AI

In all the videos I have seen, the AI look very easy to destroy. Is there going to be difficulty sliders so dog fighting takes ten minutes or so rather than seconds.

No, as far as I know, players will not be able to directly infuence the ability of the enemy AI, atleast not in online play... but it will be variable depending on many factors, such as: Faction, location of the encounter, player skill ratings and standings, etc.

In example: Fighting some small time pochers in a relatively secure system will be much easier then, say, taking on a group of ace imperal pilots protecting a high value convoy.

I agree that some of the AI pilots are pretty stupid and just sit there and let you shoot them. What you have to remember that the game is still not finished yet and the AI will improve a lot when the game is complete. I also think that things will get a lot harder on Friday when the Premium Beta starts properly and there is a lot more human players playing. :D

I think the stuff you have been watching is from the earlier Alpha builds. The AI has been cranked up a level with every release. In the latest build I've seen AI flying with Flight Assist off, using thrusters, working in pairs to get on your tail and they now dodge laser fire.

The earlier builds had AI that was pretty straight forward to blast but they are a lot tougher now. It also depends a lot on the weapons being used. When you start you have a single pulse laser and it does indeed take a long time to make a kill.

There are going to be different levels of AI ability. They won't all be of one homogenous skill level. In fact they already aren't, but I expect the upper end to improve some more.

Has anybody noticed that since alpha 3 the ai has become somewhat less aggressive. Maybe there just scared i would be ! I did spend 20 minutes in game trying to get shot up for a video and it was quite difficult. Having said that i have been shot up a few times rather rapidly. They currently seem very engaged on firing at larger ships ignoring fighters its only when the ship blows that they turn on you. Although that is a game mechanic of its own.

Yes in alpha 3 particularly in the combat zones it used to be quite tricky at times but for some reason in the combat zones in alpha 4 they dont seem to be really trying to get at me not sure why that is !?! They are quite tricky to hit but for some reason i feel less threatened. It could be that im fighting for the alliance who donseem to outnumber the feds.

Hopefully there will be the opportunity for Frontier to use us as guinea pigs in a social experiment - "How much is too much?" (in relation to AI performance characteristics - accuracy, manoeuvers, etc.)

The testing could take place in areas of the "Unidentified Contact" POI type and there could be a number of these testing zones available, with different AI performance mixes, for the brave, truly skilled or simply foolhardy to attempt.

All I can say that AI has been improved with each release. They are not there yet for community best pilots, but they are a challenge for most of us at this point. Also we lack lot of gameplay elements to measure how easy is to defeat enemy.

So you beat the Incursion scenario?... ;):)

i only gave it one try - got killed by second one of pair of fighters that jumped in i think in a 3rd wave after cobra?
Considering it was my second ever play of Elite [first being month ago], being an old fart, using mouse and keyboard and going by the forum threads about Incursion, i guess either im better than i think or that combat AI really is not THAT hard. :)
or maybe i got wrong impression, and most of players beat Incursion in very first go and i suck even worse than i think :)

Try it again now... :)

I don't think it's easy at all... :) No one is beating Incursion easy peasy lemon squeezy...

Point being, that npc AI is fine. There are many different levels of AI, and Incursion demonstrates this.

Fly safe Commander! :)

Im not aware that anything changed in last week in alpha 1.1 build...why would i try it 'now' and expect worse performance on my side? i should only get better since now i have about 1 hour flight time in elite experience, that i havnet before, and in addition now i know spawn order of my enemies, which is another advantage on my side] :D

Dunno about incursion AI - what killed me was enemy numerical superiority ,not their intelligence... [arguably i have extremely small sample size but...in the spirit of OP :) ]

i cant stress enough i consider myslef a bad pilot, hardly average at best. No advanced maneuvering, no reverseflying etc.
