ENG boost oddity, bug or feature ?.

All pips to engines, when I boost it only uses 4 bars. I cannot boost again until the 4 bars have filled up. is this normal ?.

Why can't I boost twice in quick succession, the energy is there why can't I use it.

That is not a suggestion...

Your boost needs a short reload time. Depending on your ship and number of allocated pips the bars could be refilled before you can boost again.
So it is not a bug.

To be clear, when I boost it ONLY uses the top 4 bars, the capacitor STILL has more than half charge available, the capacitor is far from being depleted, so why can't I boost again ?. or twice in succession as the capacitor has the capability to do so.

EDIT: FDev, may I suggest that you look into why I can't do the above.

Boosting has a cooldown. It has nothing to do with your capacitor charge. I can boost equally often on 4 pips in my krait as I can with 2.

Likewise, if I load all-multicannons onto my corvette, I can fire them continuously on two pips to WEP, putting in 4 pips doesn't make them shoot any faster as they're already shooting as fast as they can.

Boosting has a cooldown.
I'll buy that. Strange though that many folks mention continuous boosting...

I don't buy this analogy. Are you implying that irrespective of the number of pips allocated to ENG's and how many bars are filled that I cannot boost if the speed is above a certain value, irrespective of cool down period ?.

Each ship does indeed have its own boost profile, from how much boost it provides to how frequently it can be used and how much additional speed (and flight profile gains) it gives.

If you want a game-canonical reason, let's simply say that some ships have stronger engines and can therefore boost more often.

As others have said, maybe there's confusion on what the pips actually do. It only APPEARS to you that you have to wait til all 4 energy bars are restored. You don't, you always have to wait the same amount of time (for that particular ship), until you can boost again. You can verify this for yourself by setting eng pips to 0, then boosting. You will note that you do not recover any energy bars at all, yet on the same time interval you will be able to boost again, as long as you still have 4 bars left in the cap. When you do not, no boost for you.

CMDR FOX, again to the rescue :))

Thank you for your reply.

EDIT: So its a bit like power to weight ratio, the higher the ratio the higher the boost frequency.

You could think of it like that, but there's no math to support it, it's totally arbitrary, it's just on a per ship basis. Maybe there is a common factor, but I haven't spotted it yet, it's not mass.

Anyway, glad to help :)

And to explain that term: despite the cooldown you can permanently keep your ship at higher speed than non-boosted speed. That's good enough to qualify as continuous boosting, it just isn't necessarily at top boost speed all of the time.

Continuous boosting simply means the ability to keep speed above the max normal speed, not at max boost speed, so for instance in my Phantom with a max normal speed of 460mps I can maintain a speed above 500mps because my cool down is shorter than the amount of time it takes me to slow down from boosting, so I can boost while still at boosted speeds.

Edit, ok I admit I should have read to the end of the thread before posting, but we all do it right?
