Engaging multiple targets

I've realised as I've moved up in ship-size that I am actually losing the ability to fight multiple ships. Sure I can take more of a pounding but I can't selectively engage multiple targets.

The only way currently to do this is to have turrets set to auto and just sit there popping shield-cells whilst they do the work.

The game is orientated around fighter dog-fighting style engagements. Big ships suffer from this because they are less nimble - the only advantage they have is being able to direct more fire-power, but at the cost of only being able to direct it when things are directly in front of you - or if you don't mind sitting back and watching turrets work.

Pick your targets wisely. I always go after the small fry first just to get rid of the from the equation asap. They go down fast enough the big guys hardly strip my shield at all in that time (besides, the small ones tend to run when you beat their "protection")

Asteroids also help but aren't always around.

I have personally been a wandering blockade for a few wings as well. I hop in my super tanky conda and provide a place to take cover to regen without having to leave the party. Would be neat if I could drain my shield and shoot out essentially a shield battery for my team, but there are enough problems with batteries.

How would you engage multiple targets at once in a small ship?

How does that differ with a large ship?

Why would you want to spread your firepower over multimultiple targets at once rather than take them out one at a time (unless you are deliberately agroing as many as possible)?

I love engaging multiple ships at one time and have always done it, I'm in a python at the moment and one of my favourite past-times are the strong signal sources with three 'condas in them. It's a bit of a risk and have occasionally died when not being spot on with my shield cells, but it's awesome fun, partly because of the risk. Can't do 6 or more vultures on my own though, I die very, very quickly.

I must admit I don't use turrets though, always felt like they made it a bit too easy and maybe they should be getting the bounty rather than me.

I don't understand what you want changed? Am I missing something? Is this a "I can only point at 1 ship at a time, I want to shoot six at once!" thread, really?

Learn how to fly fa off. The bigger ships need it. You can't stay on my 6 when I can change my facing direction without changing trajectory. I also use my two c2 hard points on the python as beam turrets so there is always some damage on target.

Always have pips dedicated to sys when taking fire and you can soak so much punishment. My python can stay in a cz for hours and fight multiples no problem.

What I do is set turrets to fire at will, while shooting at other targets with fixed weapons.
Turrets get enemy#2 shields down while I'm killing off enemy#1

As FalconFly points out, doing that in combat zones tends to draw more attention.
It's still doable with high situational awareness. (Ie. stick to the edges of the fight so turrets are only in range of 1-2 enemies, and not the 10+ if you fly right in the middle :D )

I'm flying a Clipper though, so it's easy for me to kite the faster ships away from the slowest ones in the enemy wings.

It is more efficient to train you turrets on the same ship you are trying to hit with your fixed/gimbals - you kill them quicker and therefore take less damage surely?

Unless it is just about having fun (because you are overpowered versus your targets) and/or you are deliberately trying to take the agro off other pilots or get combat bonds by hitting as many ships as possible while someone else kills them for you?

Confused by OP's statement that s/he can't 'selectively engage multiple targets' in a large ship in the way s/he can do in a small ship?
