Engine/ship damage sounds (post combat)

Walking up the road thinking about Elite Dangerous this morning (as you do) I found myself wondering what it would be like bringing a badly damaged ship home after fighting off (or at least holding off) a serious attack.

Damaged engine noise? Maybe not "clankety-clank grind-grind" but even the worrying rattle of extra vibration from damaged hull panels would, I think, add to the atmosphere and drama of nursing your ship and its cargo to a safe dock after surviving against the odds. A little bit of atmospheric smoke wafting around the cockpit, joss stick like, might help too. :)

Has there been any word on this?

Visually, I'm not too sure about the current in-combat pyrotechnics, to me they look a bit like a distant firework display rather than something literally in your face.

I am not sure now what the current situation is, but some audio clues on the state of play would be good.

I imagine a badly damaged super cruise / hyper drive would distort your vision, cause nausea and make you puke and suffer horrible diarrhea and randomly misalign your body parts. The sound would be... an infinite number of you screaming from the 4rth dimension maybe? :p

Sound in space is IMPOSSIBLE! How come the 'immersion nazhzi's'' aren't all over this like they are with the 3p view? :S

Maybe a ship ai voicing all the damaged parts and how bad they are damaged over and over. Until you mute here. Or slow whoops and beeps and stuff.
But you would be able to turn this off easily. Luckily your in your little cocoon submerged in inertial dampening fluids, with a full vr view of the surroundings of your spaceship.

See thats what I've been tellin the other guys, you can make up whatever fiction you want to make it acceptable but you wouldn't just want ED to not bother to make sounds, just becus someone thought it was immersion breaking? lol love it

Nesmith: Computer, is there a replacement sphere on board?

Gwen: Computer, is there a replacement beryllium sphere on board?

Computer: 'Negative. No reserve beryllium sphere exists on board.'

Gwen: No, we have no extra beryllium sphere on board.

Sound is in the game because it is fun, there are very VERY few people who would want to play the game with no sound.

We all know the moan you are getting at (again), but here is the thing, as much as you want certain features in your game, many people are worried that what you want is in danger of altering the balance of the game for what other people want.

If you think there is a core section of people who want a game without sound, and are concerned that by having sound it will offer an unfair advantage to other people, then set up a design proposal with a poll.... and prepare to be laughed at.

Psst one ship, one pilot.

Hey, engine sounds are inside the ship not in vacuum :p So you would be able to hear them and it would be totally realistic.
And everyone knows the 4th dimension is less than a micron away and would of course be able to carry sound waves! ;)

I saw part of a behind-the-scene thing on the new Star Trek movies this weekend. JJ said they had tried to do the 'no sound in space' thing, and it just didn't work, from an immersion/dramatic standpoint.

It worked much better if there were little key moments when the sound went away, and I think agree. Certain sounds should transmit. Explain it away as your ships sensors synthesizing it for you, and your done.
