Engineer Grind - Flawed Focus Crystal

This is just the first thing that I need to farm, and it's taking forever. To the point that I no longer feel like playing the game.

First I have to cruise around a system fo find Unidentifird Signal Sources, then those locations have to have a threat level of 0 (because I'm in my exploration ship (the whole engineering point for me is to increase my exploration capabilities with Farseer)), and then I have what feels like a 1% chance to get a Flawed Focus Crystal from the signal source.

I'm hoping there's a better way. I searched online and all I can find is that I am doing the correct thing.

This is just for one upgrade........ and if it's true then suddenly ED has become garbage in my eyes.

Material Trader: Manufactured. Look for one. Everything will be much more easy. And almost any ship you explode will readily drop grade 1 material.

Sir, just look for 5 Exqusite crystals as mission reward which can be found at high tech systems,Then trade for FFC 1:27

If you read the description it says something like found in wreckage of combat ships. So try sytems in war state - set your galmap filter for war state and toodle around nearby systems looking for USS. --- if you're worried about losing your ship, just buy yourself a cheap one (Sidey, eagle, adder, hauler...) and go looking for crystals in one of them.

Also there's the material traders - flawed focus crystals are common so you should be able to trade rarer mats for them at a decent ratio.

Dav's Hope. The answer is always Dav's Hope.

^ This. I was just there, picked up quite a few types of focus crystal. Unfortunately, most of the items are now grade 1-3, so it's been hit with the nerf bat. Still, better than chasing around NSS....

Go to any REZ system, destroy some wanted ships, check the materials in the debris - there's usually loads of focus crystals of all varieties.

I only barely get to play ED, and I don't have much knowledge. I barely know how to play the game. I looked up the item in a wiki and the singular way it said to get them was to search USS locations.

Thank you for posting alternatives that I can try! What is Dav's Hope, a system, a station? I'll have to figure out how to find high tech systems before the next time I play on Saturday (pretty much only get to play on Saturday nights).

I'm pretty nervous about trading in any higher grade material, because I might need it later for a better engineering upgrade.

Also, combat is out. I've tried it a few times and I'm just not capable.

Hyades Sector DR-V c2-23 A5 at 44.818 / -31.389

Hello.

Dav's Hope is an abandoned mining settlement in system Hyades Sector DR-V C2-23, planet A5, planetary coordinates 44.818;-31.389.

Finding it for the first time can be tricky until you get the hang of reading the latitude and longitude. I found it by flying "north" until the latitude was rght on my HUD, then flying "east" until the longitude was right. The good news is that once you have found it the first time, it will show up on a planetary scan when you are in the system.

Once you are there, look at this thread:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/354425-List-of-goodies-at-Dav-s-Hope

As others have said, looking in USS in a war system can also get you what yo need. Good hunting, Commander.

edit: it's quite spooky too, if you take the time to interrogate the data points.

By far and away the easiest way I found is what has already been mentioned already - Do missions that reward you with exquisite focus crystals. I ended up with dozens and dozens of them. Each one can be traded in for 27 flawed crystals at a material trader. Missions tend to give you 5 at a time. So that's 135 flawed crystals right there!

I'm new back to the game after a very long break.......over the last 5 days I have gone from no access to engineers to gathering enough materials to upgrade to a lvl 5 FSD mod/lvl 3 Thruster mod with Felicity Farseer.

How did I do this?

I ran passenger missions where part of the reward is always Engineer materials (you have to be selective). I then did a couple of hours planetside gathering in Deciat for the raw materials, and then another couple of hours wake scanning. Following this I went to the various traders (Raw/Manufactured/Encoded) and swapped what I didn't need for what I did. So much less grinding than the last time I tried to Engineer my ships.

Very pleased with the result!! :)

That's definitely what I'm going to do. Really wish that wiki I checked had mentioned that as an option. Is there a master list somewhere of all materials that can be traded and for what?

I don't know where or how to find a material trader, but I'll look into that once I have the higher grade materials.

The material traders themselves can show you that - each material belongs to a 'family' and has a grade from 1- 5. You can trade up or down within families and across them but beware; the exchange rates for trading up (i.e. from grade 3 to 5 for example) and across families are so high that it's not really worthwhile. The best use of material brokers for trading is to take a single high grade material and convert it downwards to loads of a lower grade to save time collecting those items.

As for finding them, stick your current system in the box on the right of this page, hit 'search' and it will give you a list ordered by closest system.

Oh and as for where/how to find the various materials and data types, this is the best resource I've seen:

http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Material_Trader

Lists all the materials in their relevant sections then at the bottom has the conversion tables. Trading up and across the different sections can be a bit painful but trading down in the same section means you can quickly amass dozens of the mats you need. Also, I should have said before but usually you need to be allied to the local faction get the missions that offer grade 5 materials. The lower missions tend to over lower grade materials.

You can either use your galaxy map to find traders (there's a filter for them under services) or you can use a 3rd party tool.
