While building/engineering my first Orca for exploration, I wound up installing modules which exceeded the ship's maximum mass after they were engineered. It didn't seem to impact the performance of the ship at all, despite the fact that it was operating with a higher mass than the thrusters said they could handle.
A secondary effect of this though was that when I tried to upgrade my fuel scoop I wasn't allowed to, with the seemingly inapplicable error message that it would exceed maximum mass. It wouldn't let me replace OR store any modules, the option to store just went away.
If you get yourself stuck in this same corner, one solution that I finally worked out is to replace your fuel tank with a smaller one - this seems to convince the ship that the maximum mass is acceptable again, and then allows you to store modules again, and replace them. Figured I would share this as a new player (PS4) in case anyone else runs into the issue and is looking for a solution. Searched and didn't find any, though I did find people reporting similar behaviour as a bug. Im not sure if this is expected behaviour or a bug, but it does make sense that the engineering creates this little catch-22 condition.
