Engineered vs unengineered? what is it?

I feel like an idiot for asking, what does it actually mean?

I'm guessing it's to do with "crew" at ports? Am I wrong?

.... the reason why I never make 100% of the profit on any transaction.

At certain points in the galaxy there are engineers who will improve your modules in exchange for "stuff".
You can find info about them in the right hand panel.
Also, see here:

Um. Well, engineered vs unengineered refers to your ship upgrades. You can upgrade your ship in various ways by using the Engineers. It's a complex process.

Crew, on the other hand, have nothing to do with engineering. You can hire them to accompany you, and fight for you, but they do cost a percentage of everything you do, even when they are not active.

They also take half your combat experience.

Hope that helps.

Understood, this raises another question. Do I need a crew or not? Are they worth having?

When ships explode OP - stuff comes out of them (Manufactured Materials)
Pick some of that up, and visit "Farseer Inc" in "Deciat" (I recommend you go in Solo mode if you've never been before!)
You'll figure the rest out!

(this may be a handy site to have a read of too!)

as above crew are only useful for ships that have fighters, otherwise they take a % of money earnt from all avenues, and % of XP earnt from combat. That said I didnt mind having a npc crew, especially now that they finally can be saved if/when you go boom

Nah, maybe later in your career. At the beginning they'll just take your money and slow you down :)

I have hired and fired a few over the years. I don't find them very useful at all. Some folks do, I guess, but I think they are a waste of money and time :)

I'd suggest looking at this vod for a guide to how to engineer:

Also look at https://coriolis.io/
Pick a ship, one you own would be a good place, build it the same as your ship and then play around with the modifications (spanner icon on most components)
eg: on the hyperdrive, select long range then stripped down - look at how much extra jump range that gives compared to the base range.
mind blown. An extra part of the game I wasn't aware of.

How do I unlock the engineers?

Have a look your ship right Right Panel. You'll see a bunch of squares .. Galnet, HoloMe, Codex, Training I think, there's a button for Engineers there. This will tell you which engineers you've been invited to meet. Each Engineer has a mission they want you to complete before they will work with you.

I love people who instead of reading manual, or using google, decide to ask questions on forums, because that's the most efficient way to go about things - why bother searching and do some reading, when you can ask questions and people will spend their time telling you things already explained million times before in countless tutorials.

When purchasing any new ship, the generally come with the lowest graded components which are "E". When you replace any of them with a another such as a "D, C, B or A" your are performing the first and easiest form of engineering. Unlocking one of the various engineers, allows one to modify particular component's. Most generally the FSD is first. Switching from an "E" graded FSD to an "A" will increase the distance one can jump, modifying it at an engineer can make it go farther. The same applies to any other components. Be careful as to what you choose when modifying a particular component, because if you don't like it. You'll loose any and all the materials you spent hours gathering and have to gather additional materials.

if I remember right for ship modules it was
E = economy, cheapest
D = Lightest, good for explorers or extending jump range
C = cheaper A rated
B = Combat, more mass but better integrity
A = best in class for power and performance

Now for other ship internals the ratings could mean different things for different modules ie Refineries and limpet controllers it wasnt as straight forward.

just let it be. friendly question, nice answers. totally wholesome discussion.

no matter the topic, this is nice.

I take offense with this. I DID search google to try and find the answer. At most, I'm a terrible google searcher,

How long is a piece of string?

It depends on what you are doing.

If you are exploring most of the time then they will do nothing other than take a percentage of your profits. If you are heavily into combat they can be very useful once they reach Elite but they will be taking a percentage of your profit and half your combat XP when they are on the ship.
