Engineered vs unengineered? what is it?

Nah, maybe later in your career. At the beginning they'll just take your money and slow you down :)

I have hired and fired a few over the years. I don't find them very useful at all. Some folks do, I guess, but I think they are a waste of money and time :)
I agree that they aren't good early in your career. As for later, if you level them up to Elite they become more useful. That being said there are situations where they aren't much use.

I take offense with this. I DID search google to try and find the answer. At most, I'm a terrible google searcher,
You really are terrible.
Here's what you can get by typing this:
How do I unlock the engineers?
into google:

I love people who instead of reading manual, or using google, decide to ask questions on forums, because that's the most efficient way to go about things - why bother searching and do some reading, when you can ask questions and people will spend their time telling you things already explained million times before in countless tutorials.

And i love people who reply to them and write huuuuuge answers. Especially on Steam and Reddit. I ask them "you guys love to write huh?

If you care about getting to Elite combat rank, don't hire crew until you've achieved it; they slow down your progress. Once you're there, or if you don't mind being slowed down, try one out.

Crew members are the worst.. was the thing with trading and crew fixed? that one did it for me.

when you buy and sell goods the crew get their share from the amounts of credits you get when you sell. not the trading profit....

Skip crew.. they are a bunch of little leeches. Worse than pirates.

Think of Engineering like this : You bought a REALLY nice sports car, like a Porsche GT3. Very nice car, and you made sure to tick all the boxes for top of the line factory stuff. But you want more.. always MORE. And you heard about this place called RUF, that will do seemingly impossible things to your car, for a price. The Difference between a normal Porsche GT3 and a RUF modified GT3 ? Night and day. But you want more.. how about carbon fiber panels to save weight ? Or some really sticky tires on ultra light rims ? That's Engineers and Engineering. The best you can buy, and just a touch more...

Engineering is the last step for your ship. You can get a LOT more out of your FSD once it's been to Felicity Farseer. Thrusters need a bit more thrust ? Prof Palin can fix you right up. Power Supply not powering enough ? There's an engineer for that too. In fact, there's an engineer for almost any system ( you cant engineer guardian stuff ). But, you need an introduction from a faction or other engineer, or a rare good, or some other requirement before they'll see you. And you'll also need all the MATs for the modifications. So, MATs traders.. It's a long road.

Before you start be warned ! This is not a journey for the faint of heart. It costs in time and MATs... in fetch missions.. in buttering up others for the introduction.. and FINALLY, in terms of your soul, as you dream endlessly of that last tiny percentage you can squeeze out of your chosen ship. Like the CMDRs that compete in Anacondas that can make 84+ LY jumps. Or Cutters with over 15,000mj shields. Or 700ms+ boost speed Eagles interceptors. Or 6k range beam lasers that run cool and have no damage drop off. Or Insta-gank FDLs.. All engineered.

I don't blame them for not goggling it. Everytime I try to watch/read a tutorial it always starts with

I was born in a small town.... goes through their entire life story and at some point mention that you just need to press button A, usually in the middle of section about a failed relationship.

Much better to come on the forums, ask and read our drivel (its much more amusing)

there is much written info about how to do most everything in elite too.

but i'm totally with you. i'm too old for youtube vids, where 10seconds of info is packed into a 10 min video which covers personal info i dont want to know and elite stuff i already know.

An engineered ship that has been built to a decent spec = Happy gank proof Cmdr
An un-engineered ship (or poorly engineered ship) = Unhappy Cmdr complaining about gankers and using the block feature

From my years of testing:
Whingy Forum Posts = 1 / ((Number of mats used for engineering / 10) ^ 2) * (10 - Spec Quality)

since i have engineered my ships i have not been ganked. but have not even seen a ganker.... maybe they smell that.

but nontheless, i would block gankers making the attempt engineering or not.

If I fly an engineered Cutter in a cargo CG, I can literally pick my nose and check notifications on my smart phone.

Sometimes I watch gankers completely ignore me and go right for the Mostly Harmless ASPe or T6/7/9 ahead of me in SC. I watch the shark pull the seal into the deep, then I say to myself "aww that's a shame" and go back to picking my nose.
