Engineering Experimental question

I'm interested in adding some experimental to my various mods some of which are not yet (actually most aren't) grade 5. Supposing one has all the mats to do so for any one particular experimental, should one wait until getting the mod to g5 or can one add it at say g3. I mean what happens to the experimental add on when one increases the mod from a low to a higher grade?
 
Add experimentals at any time - you only lose them if you switch to a different recipe - it will stay as you go up in grade.
 
Slightly new question:
I've got only two ships that have weapons. Both of which though have different amounts have the same weapons. Which are Multi-cannons and Pulse Laser's. I've acquired a vast number of all the various mats needed to add the experimental effects but I'm wondering if I must add the experimental to each and every individual weapon or just the separate group?
 
Each weapon has to be addressed. Thus you can have different experimentals for each weapon in a group. ie if you have two multi's - one can be oversized and the other can be incendiary (not sure if I spelt that right!!)
