Guide / Tutorial Engineering (ships): Raw, Encoded and Manufactured materials farming guide

--- last update: 24 Mar 2025 ---

This guide still valid but it should be noted that Frontier increased the quantity of reward mats a lot, both in missions and HGE, and i mean A LOT, almost sufficient to reach the maximum available capacity starting from scratch in a single HGE.

for quantity/time efficiency is suggested to use HGE and Jameson as in guide below, downgrade using cross-trade as needed and use missions for mats absent in HGE/Jameson Site.

New mats reward have been introduced in Thargoid War by defending invaded system, more will come as PP v2.0 "care packages" that will reward credits and engineering materials, so "avoid" Dave's Hope, Crystalline Shards, Brain Tree, yes/no...

...yes, currently are less efficient; no, because I've had some great sessions exploring while collecting mats along the way.

your personal taste, your free choice, below you will find the available options.

Highlight: most asked info about Datmined Wake Exceptions source for SCO v1,
  • scan wakes with a Frame Shift Wake Scanner, better in high traffic areas such as station in "Famine Status" systems
  • from 18.08 missions provide a high amount of mats reward, but rewards are randomized and you have to find the right mission for mats you need
  • Jameson Crash Site (HIP12099 1B) now have 9 point to scan, so you can stock up Adaptive Encryptors Capture (5) and Atypical Encryption Archives (4) in one run (no relog needed), then exchange for what you need at a Material Trader (ex. Datamined Wake Exceptions), nearest Encoded Trader from HIP 12099 is at Gateway in Diaguandri system.
WARNING FDevs modified limpet fly pattern so "flak gathering" for brain tree do not work anymore, use the guide maps+ path bearing and gather using SRV.

--- update ---

Methods to gather engineering materials changed in time, cmdrs complain about the waste of time in gathering process, new ships and modules coming in game, old engineered modules become obsolete and we miss a "scrap and recover material" option in game, so...

Disclaimer,
guides are suggestions to adapt to your playing style, they show gathering methods and most time efficient ones, but repeat... adapt to your way to have fun.
relogging trick is a personal choice, FDevs removed from HGE time ago and could happen to other in future, I neither suggest nor condemn it.
I personally verified all the information contained in this post but things change over time, any update will be appreciate, send me a PM in case.

Tools and web sites
ED Odyssey Materials Helper, an awesome tool to help you gather materials, planning engineering and more, both for ship and on-foot (Python Mk2 all new ships added).
High Grade Emissions Finder, quick search of systems with HGE filtered by materials.
Engineering Material Finder, some video guide are deprecated but tables still valid and very useful.
EDCoPilot another excellent tool, as example, we can use for navigation to Brain Tree spot, you will find coord in link below.

You have high chance to find in HGE what you need, not 100% because some parameters overlap, but for sure will be a G5 man. material.
Proto Heat Rad. & Proto Radiolic Alloy (Alliance/BOOM)
Proto Heat Rad. & Proto Radiolic Alloy (Indipendent/BOOM)
Improvised Comp. (Indipendent/Civil Unrest)
Improvised Comp. (Alliance/Civil Unrest)
Pharmaceutical Isolators (Indipendent/Outbreak)
Pharmaceutical Isolators (Alliance/Outbreak)

Pharmaceutical Isolators are the worst to gain, just gather easier G5 (see uninhabited systems below) and cross trade.

Manufactured G5 Materials that you can gain only as missions reward are Biotech Conductors and Exquisite Focus Crystals, you can do:
uninhabited systems that spawn alot of HGEs, I verified this systems and will add more if available in the future,

HGE 100% Proprietary Composites and Core Dynamics Composites:
LTT 3010
LP 413-18

HGE 100% Imperial Shielding:
Laguz
21 Eridani

most materials can be gather during play session and activites:
  • Scan wake during approach to station or landing phase
  • Scan ship while traveling in supercruise
  • Add a collector limpet in your combat build for CZ or Compromised Nav beacon, to easy gather spoil of combat.
  • During Exobiology activities and Brain Tree are present, do some gather, maybe you already sampled it, but remember Cordycep Growth Grade 1 (Iron, etc.), Polyporous Growth Grade 2 (Arsenic, etc.), Mussidae Seed Pod Grade 3 (Molybdenum, Cadmium, etc.), Phloem Excretion Grade 4 (Yttrium, Polonium, etc.)
  • (be welcome with more suggestions to add)

Notes:
  • elided the content about 2nd Thargoid War story arc, the story arc is concluded, no more reward from this activities
  • put a note for Datmined Wake Exceptions gathering
  • FDevs announced a general rewamp of engineering, both ship & on-foot, so... and indeed it happened, see notes at the beginning of the post
  • Brain trees Missions reward for raw materials is efficient, old guides about crystal shard is alot less efficient but still valid if u like an exploration & gather voyage.
  • guides will be added, updated or remove if deprecated
  • TehTOECUTTER did another guide one year ago, spots are less efficient but still valid
  • TehTOECUTTER updated v4.1 Raw Mats link

Data:

Do not go to Jameson. Relogging is bad for your health and slow

So what to do..

On your bubble hopper/cargo ship/mission runner put the Wide range mod on your sensors. This will allow you to scan NPCs in Super cruise and normal cruise without having to aim for them. Now when travelling to a planet/destinations cycle thru the NPC you see. Every 3-5 NPCs will yield you one to three encoded data mats (times three). Over time you will find that your data material bins start to overflow one by one.

For wake scans. Which are needed a lot with the new sco drives. I would indeed do just that: Scan wakes at a popular system.

For variety, another data farming method I've seen is hacking megaship data transmitters, as per this youtube tutorial from @Captain-MD.

Essentially:

- Find a Freedom-class Surveyor in a low security system near you (medium security is also viable).

- Attach recon limpets to hackable data transmitters 1 & 2 in turn (also 0 if FDev ever fix whatever is currently broken there).

- Be in Silent Running when limpets attach and again when hack completes.

- Scoot out into SC before security forces show up.

- Return, rinse, repeat (no relog required).

For raw materials, I’ve always preferred to do a quick sweep for metallic meteorites in my Scarab whenever I have a reason to on the surface of a world. Each Horizons structure has a unique signal on the Scarab’s Wave scanner. Blast it, and you’ll usually get about half a dozen fragments of rare and very-rare elements. Master flyving on low-g worlds, and soon you’ll be zipping across the surface, which I consider to be a lot of fun.

It’s especially useful when you’re doing Exobiology on the more widespread bios. Scan the bio near your ship, follow WAVE scanner signal, then scan the bio near the meteorite. Accomplish two tasks with one trip.

Hey, got a huge problem. After gathering raw materials on the surface, I can't find them. It is not in the inventory or the raw materials trader. I grabbed them but they did not appear anywhere. You should discover them by scooping them up in your SRV.

Can you clarify - are you scooping them and then later finding that they are not in your inventory?

Yeah, I'm scoping them on the Mouse right button, like, simply selecting it. When I do it, it appears on the left side where usually placed data about your selected target. And there I can see that info about this material. Iron undiscovered. I tried to use scanners on the SRV but they are not scanning materials like this. And I have a feeling that this might be a bug. I've been playing Elite a long time ago, maybe 4-5 years ago. And now I'm back, maybe something broken cause of this...

Open Cargo Hatch on the SRV and drive over them to pick them up.

While they are targeted and be careful not to hit any with the wheels as that can destroy the mat or flip it out of range and might flip the SRV if you are really unlucky.

Yes, I'm doing that. Believe me, I'm doing everything right, even had a call with the experienced guy from my squadron, he's been playing for 5 years already I guess, I streamed for him what I've been doing, and everything was right. Open Cargo Hatch, drive slowly to pick up the iron, confirmation message appears that I got it, but still, all raw materials are displayed as undiscovered and there is no iron in the inventory. Also when I'm trying to trade with the raw material trader there are no materials. He said that after picking up materials should be discovered, but it doesn't happen... I feel like this can be a bug

Just gone and scoops some raws - worked fine. Post a video and someone might get a hint. Or else others will keep giving you random guesses.

Worth pointing out that this guide is out of date - mission rewards are a better source of raws than driving around now.

You would expect a bug to affect other players attempting the same thing, although it could be something to do with where you are in the game. I suggest going to the support website and asking them about it.

for some reason, I cant find missions where the reward will be raw materials. It can be some materials for engineering stuff but not raw like iron or sulphur... I will record the video and send it here and will send it to the support also soon. But actually didn't find live chat with the support( Frontier doesn't have this kind of support chat?

Daym, I fixed it, I truly do not know how but after updating my drivers, I also saw that in Elite Dangerous launcher, I had an updated Oddysey, New Horizons, but had outdated legacy Elite Dangerous, so I put it into the update. So yeah, it was fixed by updating the legacy version of Elite in the launcher, or simply by updating the drivers. Daym... now elements are discovered after pick-up

updated the post with new Raw Mats collection guide v4.1 by TehTOECUTTER

i would like to highlight about a suggestion he posted, quote:

"ATTENTION: BRAIN TREE SECTOR COLONIZERS, IT WOULD BE A NICE IDEA TO PLACE SETTLEMENTS NEAR BRAIN TREE FARMING AREAS (JUST OUTSIDE NO FIRE ZONES). THIS WILL BE A QOL UPGRADE FOR THE COMMUNITY GOING FOWARD IN TERMS OF NAVIGATING TO RAW MATERIAL COLLECTION LOCATIONS."

Just FYI - brain tree farming using collectors is not working at the moment. The collectors fail every time (yes outside draw distance but within collector range). They seem to destroy themselves on the brain tree even though the trees are not being drawn.
