Engineering the Detailed Surface Scanner: does it matter much now?

We'll have one blueprint for the DSS now, which will increase the probe radius. That makes it easier to hit the efficiency target for +25% payout, if you care about that. There are literally no downsides to the blueprint though.
Oh, and existing modded DSS-s will be converted to the new one.

The DSS is only needed if you want to "map" a planet I believe, because it shoots the probes. Don't know if its needed to FSS a system for the detailed scan or bigger payout. I'm still learning this new system myself and haven't figured out all the bells and whistles yet. I am a bit slow at the new stuff, so I have to take it one step at a time. Took me one play period just to figure out how to use the FSS. Then the next play period I learned how to map a planet. Now I have to figure out how to review the data to find out where the POIs show up and all that....baby steps.

I can clarify Shadow Wolfe's wonderings: engineering the DSS changes nothing for the system scan (FSS). All it does is help probing planets by making the probe scan radius be a little larger.

It helps planet mapping quicker, that's it.

Increasing the radius of the probes does seem like a useful upgrade. Coriolis.io still displays all the original fast/long-range/wide-angle, but those upgrades seem like they’d have limited benefit now.

I think those upgrades are actually useless now. Not even sure if they still exist in the game, or even what engineers can mod the new detailed surface scanner, as all of mine were fully engineered prior the 3.3

It's very useful, makes hitting the efficiency bonus much easier when probing. Plus the mod has zero downsides so it's essentially a "free" improvement.

I believe INARA (as of yesterday) was showing this to have a mass increase as a downside with 50% increase at the top end.

Is there any info on the stats for the new engineering mod. I have mine up to 3 available from farseer, but I don't know how far it can go or the stats. I'm trying to figure it out for a coriolis build of my dolphin explorer. I need to know the exact stats. And is coriolis or anyone going to update this soon that anyone knows?

I would say it is definitely worth upgrading. Time is money. It is also more time to enjoy the game. Efficiency is always key.
