Engineers - Easy G1 upgrades that make a difference all you need is Sulphur!*

*Well OK perhaps also Nickel or Iron...

If you've not bothered with Engineers, perhaps because you are wary of the grind, then I urge you to check out these easy to achieve Grade 1 upgrades to your basic kit.

The chances are you already have the materials needed (Iron, Sulphur, Nickel etc) in plentiful supply which will give the ability to make may rolls for the best possible outcomes. You will also be able to get these mods done at the basic Engineers Felicity Farseer and The Dweller, so no need to fly around the Galaxy getting too much stuff for the access.

Resistance Augmented Shield Booster: http://inara.cz/galaxy-blueprint/10
Requires only Phosphorus.

Overcharged Power Plant: http://inara.cz/galaxy-blueprint/13
Sulphur. Within 10 roles I had a powerplant that maxed the capacity and with none of the downsides!

Power Distributor - Weapons Focused or High Charge Capacity: http://inara.cz/galaxy-blueprint/66 / http://inara.cz/galaxy-blueprint/70
Sulphur! I had so much Sulphur from a few short exploration trips I've made so many rolls on the above blueprints and I still have 87 units left!

Beam, Burst & Pulse Lasers: Grade 1 mods such as Efficient, Focused, Short Range Blaster etc on these take only 1 unit of either Nickel, Sulphur or Iron. Again you've probably got a lot of this stuff in your cache already but if not it's easy to get with your SRV.

e.g.

Burst Efficient: http://inara.cz/galaxy-blueprint/77

Other weapons: Frag's MC, PA's... again the basic G1 mods for these use the above materials.

Thrusters Clean Drive Tuning:
http://inara.cz/galaxy-blueprint/6
Sulphur

By example last night I did a makeover of my PvE Vulture: https://coriolis.io/outfit/vulture/...wBjEYU5nO+AFgMzKA==?bn=2.1 Vulture Engineered

There's no way this would work because of the heat and the power issues but now it's well within limits and I also managed to role some good heat special effects on both Burst lasers. It's a dream to fly in a CZ/BH environment and boosts at 411 !

As you can see in the screenshot below the total power usage is at 98% for everything.

True indeed i just started with Engineers, and G1 FSD, PP or Thursters give you nice perf improvement just with easy to get ingridients

Don't forget Grade 1 thermal efficient powerplant mod, only requires iron,
and with 10 rolls I had an all upside version with +18% heat efficiency. Great for explorers.

This is pretty much what I've done to stuff like shield boosters, power plant and weapons.

I craft-spammed the level 1 shield boosters, until I got a secondary roll that increased the boosting effect by more than 30% which looks something like this;
Unmodified booster...= 20%
Modified booster.......= 27,3%

The grindest thing with Engineers is the unlocking of them and the Grading Tiers.

Once' you've unlocked grade5, you generally have the materials and commodities, or it doesn't feel too much pain to fill in the missing one or two.

Trying to breach from grade 3->5 means constantly replenishing your stock and re-rolling.
(yes you can spam the lower grade mods, but naturally they count less and less towards the next tier unlock the higher up the tree you go).

For me, outfitting the ships has been part of the pleasure of Elite.

Originally I thought the engineers, was fluff and grind for over-achievers.

But now I realise it's rubbing up the outfitting pleasure gland in a large way.
Having materials and commodities, mean you have to PLAY the game. Doing In game activities, and not just "make money" via such and such an exploit, and toss credits at the situation.
You are rewarded for using the in-game activities NOT for accumulating credits.

And it's all worth while.
Having Felicity at grade 5 right now, is a pleasure to just pop back with a new vessel top up on the materials/commodities by playing the game as you should, and give that a modification a new roll or five.

I now want Palin at Grade 5, which means grindy stuff, I need Khun at grade3, get the unlock for the next Ngee, get him upto grade 3, and get palin unlocked and then grind him up to level five.....(uhh sucks), but Class 5 thrusters.....hmmmmm....It will be worth it in the end.

Rolling multiple G1 mods is a VERY smart way to go.

I just got my gutted-out out Jaques run Python back to the bubble, re-A-specced her and got busy G1 modding.

I got a lucky G4 FSD range before heading to Jaques, so that was done...

But rolling, and re-rolling (dropping quarters in the one arm bandit) can really make for some decent results without banging my head against the the RNG wall of rare mats. (which doesn't even appeal, but I will get them eventually)

Especially with secondary rolls. These are the key as they can many times boost the stats well over the given ranges for normal rolls.

I'm at work now, but maybe I'll post pics later, but off the top of my head I went:

G1 DD, (massive turn rate improvement!!! Roll is almost too fast now really - normal speed 290, boost 378)
G1 Resist SB (Got some great secondaries that should really help),
G1 Efficient PP (I can engage FSD while fuel scooping now without heat damage)
G1 Charge Enhanced PD (got a massive +SYS secondary that will help those C6 shields plus ENG and WEP got a significant boost with re-rolling secondary rolls)
G1 Resist Shield (Will have to go do some combat to test this, but I Think resists trump raw power IMO)
G1 C3 and C2 Multicannons (got 3 out of 4 with corrosive - tested at nav beacon and melted ships like butter in the microwave!~)
G1 Range increase Beam (got a healing lazer out of this, which I kept for fun with wings)

These are all maybe 10 or 15 rolls each, (except SLF rolls, I only had 2 per) but there comes a point where diminishing returns sets in and you simply cannot roll any better.

I may edit later with other stuff but for now my point is made, G1 with multiple rolls is not too shabby for those of us who dislike the wild goose chase for rare mats. (Lets hope FD doesn't change this!!!)

A G1 FSD range upgrade can also be very helpful for starting out, the FSD range upgrade actually seems to be pretty front-loaded with its benefits (due to how FSD range is calculated I guess) so just a G1 will get you a very useful 3-4 extra LY a lot of the time.
