Engineers - first approach looking good...

... and from this point it will probably go south as I said it looks good so far :p

Anyway, completed one of my milestones (20% discount AspX from Alioth, yeah, I'm cheap) and have stocked enough credits for Anaconda (but not enough to equip it the way I like). Looking at my to-do list I still see Sag*A still incomplete. So I decided to finally do it, last time I attempted it I gave up after 5k LYs. And today's decision led me tweaking my new Asp into more range.

Stock one, exploration outfitted is giving me 32 LY max with av. 29 LY range. Not bad since my DBX (pre-patch) had 33 LY max. But I want more. Moar LY per jump - hence the Engineers are required. Atm I have access to Farseer and Martuuk and I picked Farseer as the one to play with. Armed with forum and other sources knowledge I hit the road.

Apparently my reading skills need some improvements, landed happily just to see everything red-blocked and unavailable. Yeah - forgot to bring meta-alloys. Felicity 1 : 0 Shiro. Starts good. So back to 3rd party knowledge - game itself isn't for telling where to go to find needed materials, right? But internetz r cool and off we go to Merope, time for farming.

Slightly over 300 LY trip, then another nail - how to land at exact coords. Quick YT reference and here I go, wandering semi-aimlessly to match given coords. Because inputting custom POI would be too easy. It went rather well and I found my very first proof of life. Only to find it empty and dead. Changing modes didn't helped either, so back to teh internetz.

Did I mentioned that my reading skills are lacking? Well, proof #2: further reading showed that Merope is dead indeed and apart sightseeing there's nothing to do. Luckily Maia was next door and being lighter by 118k (av is 88k, what a rip off) I went straight back to Farseer. And if you thought I did there without issues, you're wrong. Some lone pirate scum tried to intercept but I evaded.

Few jumps later I landed at Farseer and this is how my first day of Engineering ended. Yesterday I unlocked her and took a quick look what I can do. As a training course I did 2x FSD G1 rolls - I had that much materials on me. I ended with +5.4% optimized mass and +4.x% fuel per jump. Overall it gave me +3 LYs across the board. Not bad for starters. Then I pumped 27M cr in stored exploration data to shortcut into G5 level.

Heheh.

Fed Google with "FSD extended range materials" query, did read what it spilled and hit the stars again. Landed at some moon in Pleiades in search for Arsenic. Spent next half an hour driving and shooting alien barnacles. Got: nickel, sulfur, germanium, iron, molybdenium, even meta-alloys. Literally everything but arsenic. Clearing whole site gave me lots of materials I can probably use in other blueprints, but the one I came for... no, not none. Got two drops overall. And it turned both were 3 arsenic worth, for 6 arsenic total. Today I'm going so spend more time driving and shooting barnacles.

I must say - I was biased towards Engineers, in a negative way. I skipped them so far on purpose. All those rare material farming and not dropping stories, all those bad rolls tales. Doesn't sound like fun. But truth be told, so far it's not that bad. True - I'm helping myself with external data that help tremendously. Without it I can't imagine how tedious, unrewarding and frustrating this could be. With 3rd party info I just go where I'm told and stuff is just there. Only RNG decides how much and how fast I'm getting stuff.

So, farming arsenic for now, other two materials await. When I get satisfactory amount I'll go and see how G5 rolls burn my stuff and what it gives in return.

Overall outcome so far - rather positive.

@Ceekay - I know of these. Those are those 3rd party the internetz I mentioned.

@Dommarraa - that's why I;m outside the bubble  And as wise Chinese say: don't say hop... I'm just starting Engineering and just wait when the first kick in the butt happens.

What on earth?

Where's the ranting?
Why haven't you rage quit!

No caps?

I know it's already on your list, but I've found Inara to be extremely useful. I have the upgrades I'm interested in listed as favourites on the site. I have an old iPad sat at the side of me with Inara's website on. It will give you a list of required mats for your favourite upgrades, so now when I'm farming, I just need to look to my right at the list of mats I'm interested in and either keep or dump based upon that list!

Remember to fit a Wake Scanner to your Asp.
And every time you undock somewhere, scan all the available wakes for Datamined wake thingies.

Tip: dont 'reroll'. Buy a few fsds, ship them to farseer if she dont sell them and do each roll on a new one. Ythat way you keep the best one and if you ever buy another ship with that fsd class you immediately have an fsd for it. :)

Wake Scanner is on my to-buy list when I finish with arsenic farm. Farseer sadly didn't have it in stock and i haven't stopped anywhere after take off.

As for multiple FSDs - Currently I'm reusing FSD taken out of my DBX, both ships use the same max 5A, right? Tho having spare to keep good roll is valid point. Noted.

Where's the ranting?
As requested:
- immediate roll result don't show actual profit (in range extension in this case)
- re-rolling with new values I can't figure if it's an upgrade and how much of an upgrade
- while shooting barnacles with a turret and seeing it dropped something I can't tell what it is until I switch back to SRVs cockpit
- Farseer requires arsenic for her voodoo. I MUST go kill alien thing in order to get it because arsenic doesn't appear anywhere in the bubble. Despite being 53rd most abundant mineral on Earth for example.
- above also defies any laws of capitalism logic: if there's a demand, there always is a supplier. Why am I forced to gather it myself in the first place?
- and why is it at such an ineffective way?
- WHYYYY (caps) do I need to have INARA opened on iPad just to see required blueprint materials? Forgot to pin it and suddenly it's unavailable. No notes, no sticky on your dashboard, nothing?

Tea delivery? All I want is decent G5 FSD roll, 45 LY and I'm happy. 50 LY is dream come true. Apart from that Farseer has faster scanners, G3 tho but enough for me at this point.

you will be ok. 45ly on a g5 asp is not rare, 55 for the dbx.

tea is needed for laser engineer. but if u only look for jump - try getting other engineers who can make yr other internals lightweight. and maybe if u r explorer u want yr detailed planet scanner to be long range or quick scan.

You can mine arsenic on planets, if you scan planets with dss you can see if it has arsenic, and how much. Interestingly I believe its in deciat as well.

My problem is that I can't collect properly. The 1000-unit cap is pretty low when you factor in all the different things that need it. Collecting stuff is fun, so many games realize that, and at least give lip service or make things possible, somehow.

I wasn't aware there was ANY place in the game that gave a 20% discount on anything, always figured Li Yong Rui 15% was always the best you could get, especially for a Big Three ship, I'll be very disappointed if I find out I could have gotten my Corvette in a 20% discount for the ship alone as the insurance on the thing is a damn beast.

I quite enjoy engineers :)
There are a few materials that drive me round the bend, but if I can't find something I'll just do a different thing for a while and come back to it, I'm not in a rush. It would be nice if there was a better way to find some of them (waiting for the right signal source is annoying), maybe the materials exchange broker that some people have mentioned, or......... Wait, this is the perfect thing for search and rescue rewards, find 5 escape pods get 3 pharmaceutical Isolators (you could pick the item you want from a list and see how much salvage you need to deliver, like the commodities market for salvage), that would work for me, it's another option, do it FD :)

You can use EDDB. "Bodies" tab to find the closest planet with Arsenic.

Material Finder > Arsenic
Body Group > Planet
Reference system > Your Current System

>>> Find bodies

Sort by the last tab (the distance in ly).

https://eddb.io/body

Enjoy!

Engineering is pretty easy once you master the dozens of tools and guides you need for it :)

20% discount isn't common, in fact it's rather rare occurrence. 10-15% is far more accessible. 20% off for AspX is in Alioth ssytem, which requires allied status with ruling faction. This can take a while to get and only reason I farmed this was the big 20% cut from the initial price tag. The best place to check for discounts is ED wikia. Just search for ship you are interested in, scroll down till "purchase location" and align according to price. Note that it may be outdated in certain cases but overall it will give you some idea.

@Tadeus72 - I'm aware of that feature. Only that Pleiades' moon is said to yield the fastest results. Since it's my first tap into Engineers I'd thought I try the best spot available. You know - get semi-granted results before I decide it's not worth due to clueless and fruitless flying.

And about engineering overlay app - I knew I forgot about something, thanks for reminding me about this app.
