Engineers Guide?

So, I've bought the expansion and so far, so good. I started the search for the engineers but it sounds a bit daunting. I really don't know where to start and what is more usefull to me (I'm a BH mostly). So, I ask, where can a find a good guide in terms of who to visit first, what is cost effective and what is wasteful?

I do know what to do, how to progress with the engineers, what I'm asking here is the advice of someone who did it all and knows what to do.

Thanks!

Hi Morwys. The engineers can be quite daunting if you chase them to the point that it becomes a grind and expect overnight to have the best goodies. My advice is to use this guide http://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers and set realistic goals for yourself. I'm certainly willing to help (I've unlocked and upgraded to G5 many of them), but I don't have time to write a guide.

My first question to you is: do you already have any invites from some of them, or are they all hidden from you?

Hi there. I have been ninjaed. :)

You need a runabout ship for long range jumping, and probably should install a 4 ton cargo rack at least on your main ship for transferring stuff, right off in the beginning. The initial runabout can be a D-rated hauler with a good FSD and Thruster setup.

Go here to see all the Engineers. And what they make.
http://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers

I would start with Felicity Farseer for FSD ( makes moving around easier for all the rest) and Drives ( makes getting away from interdictions easy) and mod myself an Asp or Cobra to do the running around. This is optional. But the Drives at level 3 might be all your fighting ship needs, and every ship is made better by FSD improved range. Felicity also gives access to level one Power Plant mods- generally enough for most builds.
If your Bounty hunting ship is a Vulture, you will love Felicity.

If you look at the page, http://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers you can see that unlocking the ones at the top opens up ones below. There are yellow arrows to indicate the progression. So at the right hand side of the page, Tod then Selene then Didi are the key ones for a fighting ship.

Tod is easy to level up- just hit any alliance Rez, and bounty hunt yourself a few million in Alliance bounties. I do that in the nearest High Tech system- Wolf ( something) near his base. He takes those to level and will open up Selene. You will probably want to use the Multicannons at level 5, generally considered to be a best-choice weapon, as part of your build in the beginning- or the sole weapon type.

Selene needs 500 tons mined, and wants 10 tons of Painite- only obtainable by mining. You will need a mining ship to do this. Her level 5 mods are really really good though. Armor & HRP are really lifesavers.

Didi wants a crapload of Lavian Brandy- just use your runabout to haul it in to Leesti where she is. Shield boosters make a HU-GE difference to shield performance. Bigger than the shield generator mods even. You definitely want those mods. Definitely.

Separately, you probably would like the Dweller to upgrade your Power Distributor and any pulse lasers you carry. And finally do Shield mods at Lei Chung later on.

You can look at doing just some useful Level one mods on your ship to get started.

Like every level one roll, Power Plant and Drives just need ONE component. Get yourself a small stack of the element you need, and roll a few tries- keep the best one. Iron for Low Emissions Power Plant is really plentiful on planets. If you get a pile of 150 or so Iron, you can level up an engineer by mindlessly just rolling versions of the Power plant, and discarding the results. Sooner or later, you will get a BooMShakalaka roll on that Plant. Your next upgrade ( if you need one!) can then be a whopping jump to level 5 right off.

After getting a couple level one mods, you may want to look at this post:

Robin gives great advice. One thing I would add, be aware that commodities for the Engineers, things like nanobreakers and modular terminals, the stuff that takes cargo space, will attract pirates in droves. So don't carry them around with you. Get everything else you need first, Then get the commodity and go directly to the Engineer.

After jumping around searching for meta alloys for a week, I gave up on engineers. I don't have time as some "no life type of guy" to deal with this random generator.

Really? All of the other "no life type of guy" activities are all good, though, in your book? Or just the one's you personally deem worthwhile?

After going through it too, all the above is very good advice. Except not bothering ;)... I enjoyed every minute of it, after they had a re-think, the end results!!! My Vulture is just parked up for now (it feels like I'm cheating).

My approach:
Get them open for business first.

If you're into combat scoop everything that ships drop on destruction. Everything.
Go into every Threat Level 0 USS you come across. Scoop it all. Especially look out for the "High Grade Emissions" and "Combat Aftermath" these give the best goodies.
Spend an hour or two planetside, location or planet/moon composition unimportant at this stage. Get used to the SRV and scanner. Pick up everything. You don't need to find any Polonium now so can breath easy... Maybe hit a base or five... Medium security + or ++ avoid those with the large outer tresspass zones (not worth the effort, or a Wanted status) scan all of the Data Points: find them all, then scan them, it's on a countdown timer that resets. They give all the Firmware/Data needed. Modified Embedded Firmware etc. I now have a little list of six places I can hit for all my Firmware needs. They take a week I think to reset.
Get a Wake Scanner and scan wakes at a Nav Beacon or station. I used to hunt at the Beacon of my home system, pick up all the ship drops and scan all the wakes. Just tidying up all the mess I'd made as I went :D
You don't notice you're ship scanning, although targetting ships in supercruise is a no brainer. You'll end up discarding LOTS of ship scan data, it clogs up the inventory quickly. Watch out for when it's full, you won't pick up any more data but you won't get any subsequent msgs telling you you're not.
Just play for a bit and forget you're collecting stuff along the way... Maybe make a list of the Very Rare stuff so if some pops up as a mission reward you won't miss it. Exquisite Focus Crystals spring to mind.

You don't NEED to hoard the Commodities as many feel the need to. Just needs some common sense. All my ships are completely engineered and I didn't hoard a single item... But if I ever see Micro Weave Cooling Hoses (Dirty Drives G3) or Nanobreakers (Power Distributor G3 upgrades) I will take the mission and do some further rolls on anything not yet to my satisfaction.

Then start targeting the specific upgrades you want. You'll find you already have lots of bits and pieces by now and can target search for what you don't have.
Top of most people's list to go for first is the FSD range upgrade, makes sense, first upgrade I give to all my ships. A Vulture with a 20ly jump is nice to fly places... Available from Felicity or Elvira, both to level five... This is the first real choice; do you want G3 Dirty Drives? (yes, yes you do ;)). Or G3 Shields... Most opt for Felicity BUT she requires Meta-Alloys to unlock, Elvira needs Soontil Relics which can be bought.

By then you'll be well on your way.
Hope there's something here that helps. My best advice is do it alongside what you'd be doing anyway, unless it's something targetted. It's not a grind or chore then.

Good luck Cmdr

(I feel very compelled to add... G5 Overcharged Multicannons.... The glory... The devastation... The insane grin as you open fire the first time ;)...)
