Engineers in 1.6 - Why?

Two of us have answered with the reason. Frontier DEVs didn't take the extra time to remove the notifications for those that don't have Horizons, but all the content is needed for you to interact with other players who have engineer-modded weapons. If you don't have the content on your client you can't render the new weapon effects when they're in the same instance as you. Maybe they will remove the notifications for non-Horizons players at some future date, but you need the content itself to play.

Wait so what does 1.6 do then?

Wait so what does 1.6 do then?

Consider 1.6 like MSDOS was to Windows 3.1 / 95 / 98 etc. Just like Windows used to run on top of DOS, 2.1 runs on top of the 1.6 core.

1.6 handles all spaced based activities, which is where we will be for the most part. 2.1 provides planetary access (and all that entails) which is a separate entity running on top of the core engine.

Most features from 2.1 will actually be present in the 1.6 code but 1.6 users will only be given "read only access" to it as they cannot land to activate it for themselves.

It is because of this that there are still rogue elements of features from 2.1 that appear for users of 1.6 as the only real change in the code involves planetary specific features. Everything else is handled by the core engine, including the notifications maddog is receiving.

Not an ideal situation, but it is why they released this to beta so kinks like this can be ironed out...

Its the same Game in the same Galaxy, no matter if you have 1.6 or 2.1. You just can't acess everything in 1.6, but its there.

at least thats how I understand it.

If people can see something in the game that they can't access due to not having the relevant expansion, it might prompt them to buy said expansion. Hiding it away won't help FDs sales.

This might sound rude, but buy a real computer not a fancy apple box. You should be happy fdev even supports mac in any way.

Also shell out the money for the expansion when 2.1. comes out its not THAT EXPENSIVE.

Seriously, please learn to read. I'm on a Mac. Please direct me to the page on the Frontier store where I can purchase Horizons for Mac. It's Ok, I'll wait…

Actually don't bother. I already got the lifetime pass anyway from backing the original Kickstarter. If there was Horizons for Mac, I would have it.
There isn't. I don't.

Whoa there cowboy, only a couple of posts up you were telling people to read your post and realise this wasnt just a Mac issue but a 1.6 issue. Poster was probably replying in this context.

Perhaps some of the engineers will have the space equivalent of a burger van and will take to the void in search of 1.6 customers.

But I'm on MAC. Talk about blindfolded Mac user living in their prison world.

Whereas, Windows users all worry themselves sick about whether the software they use is available on other platforms :)

Elite is a PC release and mac got lucky enough to get first Elite Dangerous (And seriously I think Frontier should have saved money by not doing this). He does not realize it is a gift Frontier made to Mac user and not something Frontier own to Mac user.
So he CHOOSE to whine about 1.6 not being only tailored for Mac user, because he's infected with the selfish/egocentric syndrom of Mac user.

No need to try and deal with such people. Their mind is imprisoned in the Evil Mac world and can't be saved :D

I suspect like me he pleged to get to the OS X stretch target in the KickStarter. Luck wasn't involved, hard cash was.

PS Macintosh is a PC, as in personal computer.

OP's got a legitimate beef. I mean, it's not that difficult to wrap a line of code in an if statement
Code:
if (invite.requiresHorizons() && installedSeasons.includes(1)) {
     invite.send();
}
He doesn't want to remove the engineers from the codebase. He just doesn't want to see invites and/or missions that involve them.

It's got nothing to do with Mac. I just bought Horizons 2 weeks ago. If I had delayed that purchase by a month or two, I would have been a 1.6 user on Windows. Just like a 1.6 user isn't seeing Surface missions (I can vouch for this as I was playing on 1.5 recently), they probably shouldn't be seeing Engineer missions/invites.

I've inadvertently made a similar point in another post as the OP, but I agree - it's frustrating at best and disingenuous at worst to have in game content appear to be available and then whisked away effectively behind a paywall.

I don't mind (too much) not being able to land on planets without paying more money, but I do mind taking a mission of which the second leg asks me to land on a planet. Expansion required content should be clearly differentiated or you're not just adding to the experience for players with the expansion, you're actively detracting from the experience of vanilla players. It's less fun.

If I log in on 1.6 I'd like the game to treat me the same as if I log in on 2.1. Would suck to run 1.6 on an old machine (because so far 1.x taxes less than 2.x) amd miss a bunch of engineer invites I could have used when I jump on my faster machine.
