Newcomer / Intro Engineer's modifications - removing

You really do need to think ahead in this game, don't you?

I unlocked Felicity Farseer, and by pure chance found I had materials to modify Power Plant, Thrusters and FSD - so I did,of course. Now, here's the thing - because I was carrying meta-alloy, and had been trashed once on the way to Farseer, I'd upgraded from my exploration outfitting to one that gave me a better chance of escaping interdiction - 4A power, thrusters and FSD. Now I want to go back to exploring, which means downgrading power and thrusters to less mass to increase range - but what happens to the modifications? Do I lose them? Do they somehow get applied to my new equipment? Or will they be available to me if and when I change up again?

Yes, if you sell a module you lose the mod unless you move it onto another ship.

You can buy anything that will accept that size module and use for storage.

Consider the impact of selling what you have. A decently modded FSD should give you better range than a specialized ship wthout mods.

YMMV

Once you leave a station, or if you wait too long, you cannot re-buy sold modules.

The modifications are done to the specific module and are lost once gone from re-buy availability.

Module storage and retrieval are announced as a pending feature update, but are not here yet.

There is module storage due in about 3 weeks, otherwise it is use what you have, get a Cobra 3 to store them on or lose them I am afraid.

Decisions, decisions.....

My plan was to earn lots of CR by concentrating on the CG for exploration data - in top 75% ATM but that won't last.

Unfortunately, I can't re-equip my Cobra Mk III for exploration as I'm currently down to less than insurance cost in CR - about 0.5 MCR, unless I sell my 4A engineer modified power plant and 4A modified thrusters in order to buy the advanced scanner, mobile repair unit, 4A fuel scoop etc.

So - hard choices.

1. Sell my stored Eagle for about .75 MCR and get what I can without going under insurance cost and go exploring in the less than ideal Cobra. I could manage without the planetary landing hangar and vehicles, maybe a smaller fuel scoop, and risk not having mobile repair facility.

2. Do some bounty hunting at RES sites in the Eagle to earn some CR -but this will take time and only 2 days of the CG left to run.

3. Downgrade my thrusters and power plant in the Cobra, losing the engineer mods in the process, in order to properly equip the Cobra for exploring.

The Eagle won't take the 4A upgraded equipment, BTW.

What would you do, fellow CMDRs?

Hard choice.
Though I personally wouldn't be too afraid ofselling the engineered modules, unless they are grade 5.

Follow your dream! :D

Thanks - this is currently my favoured option, getting the upgrades wasn't exactly difficult, once I'd been through the pain of getting the meta-alloy to Felicity Farseer - I fortuitously had the necessary materials (though I confess I'm not sure how I got them!) The main upgrade I wanted was to the FSD, which I shall be retaining anyway.

You don't 'necessarily' need a long jump range for exploring I think?

You do, if you have a far off destination of course (eg. if you're trrying to get distance from bubble to start logging first discovered by, or off to Saggitarius A) but there are a mind boggling number of systems to work cartographics for, right on the doorstep?

:)

I call this "surveying" and did quite a bit in a VERY below optimised T7, with like a 5Ly range or something silly.

If you're just looking to get some exploration data for the CG, take the Cobra as is, so long as its got at least a basic discovery scanner and a fuel scoop. Exploration CGs only count the number of systems you've explored, not the planets within those systems, so all you need to do is scan the primary star and move on to the next system.

No need to go far away from the bubble, so you don't need a repair unit, or specialised long range explorer build.

Your top 75% standing in the CG may last - I'm also participating and am in the top 10% with just over 500 reports submitted. This one is quite slow compared to the last CG, due to so many people playing the beta. I doubt it reaches Tier 6.

I'm using my Cobra which has a full fuel jump range of just under 24 ly - kept my weapons, shield generator, 4D thrusters and my A-rated distributor.

For exploration CGs you just need to head off somewhere random for about 10 jumps then head somewhere else again for about 10 jumps but not gettting to far from the CG station, head back every hour to cash in the scans. Lose a cargo rack for extra fuel, a basic scanner will be good enough, as will a B rated fuel scoop, short runs like that mean that you won't need the AMFU. With exploration CGs it is a case of never mind the quality feel the width.

Basically some good advice is to use the level 1 to 3 mods on ships you are still editing but want to upgrade.
If you are doing engineer mods on level 4/5 be sure that module is not going to be changed in the future :)

Or as above get a second ship when you get the cash :)
