Meh'.

That's it.

I RP as a space trucker, big time, and during my self-imposed exile from the game, which ended yesterday, I thought... "Engineer mods don't really matter."

I play in Solo. And I now know how to survive interdictions from NPC's, thanks in no small part to our awesome community. Hell, I'm starting to learn how to avoid them now! Never bothered pre-2.1...

Would engineer mods be nice? Sure, of course they would. But am I not able to play without them? I realise now that they just don't matter.

With this in mind, and knowing that engineers can have rep gained through activities other than rolling mods... Well, I see the "grind" isn't that bad. I mean, 10 million in exploration data for Farseer? That's easy! Could do that in a day if my meds' didn't knock me out. :p

So I'm just gonna' keep playing Elite, and sure, I'll work on rep' with engineers, but not through rolling mods 200 times. We know now that isn't needed. There are far more interesting methods.

One day I'll have my super-modded Cobra Mk IV mining rig, but that can wait. I'm gonna' enjoy the journey. I see it like that now.

And, it's a much healthier view to have. :)

Fly safe dudes & dudettes.

I've been somewhat hesitant to jump to conclusions prematurely on the 2.1 upgrade, but over the past week I find it starting to make more sense to me.

There are still some tweaks and minor bugs to fix, but overall I'm starting to enjoy it.

I think the OP NPC situation put many players into hyperbole mode, but now that it's been toned down a bit. it seems more reasonable and should be a better environment for a broader range of players.

I'm not shouting from the rooftops yet, but it is growing on me.

I'd really like to see some changes to the menu designs, but still, it's an improvement over scrolling endlessly to find things in Station menus. I'll give them a B for now, but with some small changes it could easily get extra credit for an A.

It's coming along.

The decision to "enjoy the journey" is exactly why; a) I cleared my save 3-4 weeks ago, and b) I'm having the best time I've had since the first time I was allowed in to the alpha.

I mean, I'm not gonna' go so far as clear my save. Love my Cobras too much. But I get where you're coming from.

Yes, adjustment of ones mind set is needed for engineers. After maybe six months, most people will have want they need. But so many (including myself to some degree) want to experience good progression from day one.

Its a bit like playing a new lottery game, after a couple of weeks the realisation that this is a medium to long term endeavour begins to sink in.
Flimley.

I'd say I like everything in this update except the Engineers themselves. It's not hard to rank up with them, just tedious. They provide mods that (and for the foreseeable future will continue to) create a very wide gap in mechanical capability between ships that are and are not modded. Forgoing them costs nothing in Solo play, but creates a situation that's akin to an arms race in Open. Given the general rarity of encounters (outside coordinated PP operations and busy CG's) this isn't that huge of a problem for the time being. In six months (or less, we'll see) as these mods filter out into the larger part of the general playerbase, it'll start to become evident that they trivialize most AI encounters, and it remains to be seen how FDev will compensate that.

Put another way, in terms of an MMO, we've got Raid gear (top of the line, breaks-the-game-in-half equipment for content that isn't a raid) but no raids to do (so to speak, FDev's got a long way to go before their multiplayer matchmaking is up to snuff to lean heavily on the multiplayer component for content, imho). It's literally just a matter of time before player power-progression leap frogs what the stock ships are capable of, regardless of the AI flying them (multi-rail-plasma-frag-cannons aside, anyway).
