Engineers, RND and the BGS

The unpredictable randomness is one the reasons why Ive almost completely ignored engineers since their inception on 2.1. Doesnt feel right so I ignore them entirely and adapt my game accordingly. The part where I gotta hang around one specific area of the game fer x amount of time farming materials that noone ever thought to just farm and sell direct, and still jump through hoops to get them...just doesnt do it fer me and basically cant be bothered with them at all because there arent actually that many benefits when none of yer ships have a single gun between them.

What any of that has to do with the bgs is quite beyond me however...thats a very different set of mechanics that have very little in common with the other. Im probably in the minority who do ignore them entirely although it wouldnt matter if I was the only one, Ill still ignore them until they are no longer based of rng.

Randomness makes complete sense in the context of Engineers.

Engineers, aka "Mad Scientists", are not fitting off-the-shelf mods for you - you are letting them experiment and tinker with your ship, and hoping that they come up with something better. You've probably signed a disclaimer, and the only (!?) unrealistic aspect is that theres no chance of them completely trashing your ship and you flying home in a loaned Sidewinder.

If they were doing something repeatable and predictable, then it would be productised and you'd be able to buy it in a Station outfitters.

Also remember that randomness has underpinned most simulation games since the first dice where rolled and the first cards suffled.

So, basically space magic?

These modules they are manipulating are mass produced. Their mods are mass produced, only with insanely large tolerances. If we learn they are using lost guardian tech that they don't fully understand I'll be cool with that - it's basically giving a more respectable face to the space magic.

edit: Ehhhh... you know what? Scratch that. Making the guardians posses tech that can make your gun auto reload OR make your bullets cause heat damage randomly is something best to leave in the back of the "just roll with it" cabinet.

Yes, they are using lost Guardian Tech.

Also, their pet Thargoid helps out around the workshop, it's many arms and hands are very useful when handing the Engineer tools.

By the BGS, I am talking about the whole 'lone pilot with his ship' thing, someone making their own way in the galaxy. Basically boils down to ideal that if a player wants something he has to go and get it, nothing is provided for free or provided easily.

So nothing to do with the BGS, then.
