Engineers stifles the game.

"Best" and "Fact" in the same sentence becomes an Opinion.

One I do not entirely disagree with, but the fact remains this is an opinion.

Moving on to hate speeches though... nah, I'm not even opening that can of worms. Hail Victory.

Don't be vague, you don't agree because?

Do you have a better game of this type, do tell i'll go and play it.

I gather he means hate speech is a term reserved for more serious matters and not very well applied here. On a side note, despite my misgivings on how engineers is currently implemented, this is my favourite game and the sole purpose for my hotas.

@Ozram

Fair enough. but i feel he questions the opinion rather than the hate thing. Unfortunatly some of the posts in some of the anti-engeneer thread do cross that line. However I find you reasonable. :)

You don't have to max everything. All my ships are engineered with a mix of levels of upgrades, whatever I felt like doing or had the stuff to do at the time.

Yes, well put. Despite its many flaws, the sole purpose for my HOTAS as well.

The idea that you need the best of the best is no different from every other game or MMO then. The difference is unlike in AS12 in FF XIV it is not mandatory to have i240 gear in every slot.

What you are saying is that you feel pressured to do so and I'd agree. 100%.

But unlike hardcore raids in an MMO it's not mandatory to do it if you don't want too. It's not. No matter how much you argue otherwise, it is not mandatory in Elite to grind.

Why it's true that it's not mandatory, it also true that it's objectively worse to not engineer your ship. So by not engaging in engineers you're handicapping yourself needlessly.

It may be beneficial, it might make it more fun, it might open things up for you. But it's not mandatory. You're confusing feeling pressured to do something with being forced to do something. They are not the same thing. I would agree the game pressures you do grind and do things you don't like but I'm never forced to do it. I do it because I choose to because I want the result.

You do it for the advantages it gives you, like everyone else. It's almost like you need them, to do better.

Also, you can't complain about a grind and then say it's becoming casual. A grind is the exact opposite of casual. I think you just mean to say it's becoming a game you don't like.

A grindy game can be a casual game you just look at mobile games and you'll realise how wrong about this you are. Well duh it has become a game I don't like, but then again it started out as a game I loved playing and was up until 2.1.

Let's start off with defining "better". What's "better" to you and "better" to me could be very different.
Are there other "fly-a-ship-around-in-space" games, yes, quite a few. Kerbal Space Program, Star Citizen, Star Trek: Online, the Mass Effect Trilogy - soon to be a Quadrology, just to name a few.
Now, KSP is a bit of a different sort of game, with a very different look, and it doesn't really appeal to me.
Star Citizen is far from being a "complete" game, in that it is still missing many features, and it doesn't compare in scale.
Star Trek: Online has nearly all the same sorts of things to offer we have here, plus definite story lines, though it lacks the complexity of control and "hands-on" feeling we have here. But I also enjoy it too, when I want something a little different.
Mass Effect: I'd not even heard of this series until about a year ago, and very quickly feel deeply in love with it. Not only is the story complex, the characters compelling, and the consequences of your actions quite "real", they also span across all three titles, which is something you don't often see in games - have a companion die in Mass Effect, they're still dead in Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. ME: Andromeda promises to be something of a fresh start in the series, so it waits to be seen. I know I'm waiting to see it for sure!

So it's simply the matter of stating Elite is "the best" game of this genre. But make no mistake, it is an amazing game. But does it have its flaws? Certainly. Bugs that go unfixed, career paths that are in dire need of some serious attention (Explorer much?), a strongly divided community largely split over matters of opinion, a lack of more than a few customization options, and the sheer amount of untapped potential that may or may not ever get touched are all elements that, to me, hold Elite back from reaching its potential, making it less than "best". But for its flaws, it is still a truly impressive game that I enjoy, perhaps more than I should.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with an opinion, except to state an opinion is fact, as these are contradictory in nature.

Back you, Shar, what makes Elite "the best" for you? And the challenge, can you step back objectively and see Elite's faults as well?

And as to "hate speech", yes, I did also intend to imply that it is a strong phrase, typically reserved for truly serious and generally offensive language that serves only to inspire contempt.

Coming up against SDC in the recent Farewell To Walter CG was the first time I've ever felt the true disparity between NPC's and a highly skilled and meticulously modded CMDR, especially the one's who've drilled in wing combat. No doubt about it, if you want to engage in PvP, or travel to popular CG's in Open, being modded up to the hilt is absolutely essential, and even then might not be enough to save your bacon.

With that said, having my teeth kicked in and losing a lot of my spare cash in rebuys to SDC pilot's has only stiffened my resolve to continue sharpening my own modules, as well as my own piloting skills. My own foray into the world of engineering has yielded amazing results, even if I haven't pursued the "meta." In just the few hours of play that I've had since last week I've literally rebuilt my ship from the ground up, and I highly recommend that everybody who likes playing in Open does this, even if their goal is simply to be more "survivable." One thing to keep in mind about the engineers, and I mean this especially for people who feel negatively towards them...they aren't going anywhere, and like it or not, there are CMDR's out their constantly honing their build.

This is pretty much how it is. as much as I dislike Engineers (just too many layers of RNG for my tastes), if you want to play in open, you kinda need to do it. I've not got too many mods yet, L5 FSD is the main one that most of my ships have, but grinding out the engineers I don't need to get tot he ones I want is sucking up a lot of time. Fortunately, I am smart enough to stop the grind before it drives me mad and go do something else for a while.

My ships, one day, will all be nicely modded, but for now, it's modular terminals whenever I can get them...

Concerning about 90% of the materials I have it down to a science, so it really doesn't seem like a grind to me. As I said earlier in this thread I started out the other day with the objective of unlocking Didi Vadderman and upgrading 5x SCB's to G5. I managed it in roughly 2.5 hours playtime, including gathering materials and commodities and unlocking her with 50 units of Lavian Brandy. 2.5 hours playtime and now I have 5 G5 SCB's to add to my already G5 shield generator. I wish getting my hands on a Cutter were the same kind of grind:)

Re: MT's. Don't forget that you can drop them off in batches at Quent's, as opposed to hauling them around looking for more at the same time.

Having just spent several days unwilling to leave my python because I didn't have the cargo space for the engineer mats I was carrying around, unable to do HazRez (same reason), and unable to spend on engineers because I didn't have the super rares (like highest focus crystals or modified firmware); I was finally killed (toddler aggro) to lose it all... and now I can't find landmines either.

Yea: Engineer implamentation sucks.

You should be happy with what Frontier has given you, instead you come here and complain. You're just like those children that bought into Nomanssky and then chased that poor developer into hiding. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Stop being so privileged.

I was upgrading my new python a couple nights ago and went to Tod with a load of MW cooling hoses and reinforced mounting plates, forgetting I had lost a level of rep with him doing requests. Tried level 1 upgrades, too slow. Spent 2 hours doing super boring nav beacon bounty hunting to build rep, too boring. Second evening, got fed up and went to a hazres. I just made sure to surround myself with as many cops as possible. Still had to run away a couple times, when jumped by multiple ships, but it is doable.
