Engineers Engineers

I have been happily grinding/playing this game since it came out, I've played how I want to play get trade elite then combat, tried to get explorer but can't no more grind in me, so when I had a go at farsee just spending hours looking for stuff to pay her with seems barmy, I am a billionaire why cant I just pay her , Its a good idea if you don't want to grind for credits then grind for stuff but surely in any world credits buy you anything, when I my ship gets blown up it comes back with level 5 fsd so the insurance company can get them why cant I . There ought to be companies now on stations just doing ships up (M class, Dave's Dodgy Motors, insert name here) I done my grinding why cant I benefit and just pay for it ?

P S for all the its another moaner, this is not in any way a moan no way I'm not moaning at all blah blah bla

A lot of people don't seem to understand the concept of the Engineers. They aren't like the ordinary technicians who install modules for you, nor do they need money. They are the Agatha Heterodynes of the Elite Universe, mad scientists who want to be left alone to do their work... but who also need guinea pigs to test their ideas on. They know not everyone will let them tinker with their ships, so they send potential test subjects out on snipe quests. Those that come back with the useless items they requested get the modifications they wanted, with perhaps a little extra thrown in from their tests.

Remember, you are not doing THEM a favor by gracing them with your presence and making demands on their time. They are doing YOU a favor by allowing you to help usher in the next generation of FSDs, shield systems, rail guns, or whatever else they are interested in.

Players: The game is too grindy there's nothing to do, more content!
Devs: What do you do whilst in game?
Players: Oh you know the latest most profitable activity, Robigo/Sothis/Draconis
Devs: Ok, here's some cool upgrades that money can't buy
Players: Are they useless like the powerplay weapons?
Devs: No they are really powerful and all upgrades!
Players: So what do we have to do if money can't buy them?
Devs: Well a bit of everything, mining, trading, planet driving, base attacks, exploring, combat against all different kinds of ships, finding alien artefacts and more!
Players: Too much grind, can't I just do the same thing over and over then buy it?
Devs: Facepalm.

Now I don't know if thats how it happened. I have no knowledge or experience of dev decisions/reasoning. That's just my guess at what went down. Kinda makes total sense when you look at it.
Also there's more than a few threads where Engineers have helped people find a part of the game they ignored and found that they really enjoyed mining, or exploring or whatever.

Overall money can't buy things exist in every game, some are progression locked, some are achievement locked or event locked, some are reputation locked. Elite now has 2, the faction ships and Engineers. More may come but this isn't something new by any stretch of the imagination.

Engineers drives me bonkers. I keep getting John Cleese fist shaking moments. But I stress that I keep messing it up and its my frustration at myself I am really bonked about. Ive now got to go off and murder more refugees. Makes me feel like Katie Hopkins.

@alex brentnall... so very, very true. Rep to you sir!

Its just the 'wrong kind of content'. We didnt actually want anything that is in the least bit challenging. I have plenty of money to buy stuff for my fleet but am so pleased that i have had to do stuff and got 17 out of the 20 engineers unlocked before the latest dumbing down...

"They are doing YOU a favor by allowing you to help usher in the next generation of FSDs, shield systems, rail guns, or whatever else they are interested in."
so why aren't the ship builders seizing this opportunity, back engineer it, make it better, sell it on local shipyards make money isn't that real life?

Following a few responses I think I maybe should add a opinion to my post that was largely thoughts and not my views.

Personally I think some aspects of the Engineers are too grindy. Sirius permit and certain unlocks, rare goods spring to mind. But, on the whole mods are very easy to get for L1 and fairly easy all the way to L5. That is unless you are maxxing out for the best roll and need 20x the materials. Finally the most frustrating aspect is mission only stuff.

There are 3 changes I'd like to see:
1) Alterations to some of the unlocks for Engineers
2) Minor changes to how things are done on the Engineers side. Bigger rep bonuses for applying things instead or re-rolling. Ability to apply mods to more than 1 item. Some QoL changes to reduce number of clicks required.
3) Engineers mission board. Doesn't have to be at the Engineers but some place where there's a much much much higher % chance of getting engineer data/commodities/materials from missions. Payouts can be reduced or even 0 for these missions. Whilst not reducing the effort it does give us a focal point to aim for and a purpose instead of randomly searching and hoping we hit a 6 on the dice. Provided I have a path I don't mind if it's a long or short one provided I know I'm not headed in totally the wrong direction.
4) Ability to put more materials in for higher % chance of better rolls. Still hugely RNG based so even if you put 2x the materials in you arn't promised 2x better roll, just you have a higher chance of hitting the top areas.
5) Ability to set a priority. For example if I prioritise one thing (mass multiplier for example) that'll get a higher % chance of getting a better roll on that as well as secondary effects that increase it.

2.2.03 will make it easier but personally I'd have gone a different way (as above). I really like the favour system tbh. Effort vs reward is fairly balanced imho on that one.

Finally just a note to say I made a monster spreadsheet from Inara when I did engineers. Knew it was 3x rolls of each level for a rank up then 3x the next one etc so I picked the easiest per engineer per level. Then I went out for data/materials etc in advance and did a loop round in my Anaconda collecting the commodities that were buyable (easiest mods :D).

Anyway it was pretty much like a tick-off exercise so from start to finish it took me about 2 weeks to gather and go round unlocking (2 full weekends and 2 hours or so after work each day). Considering thats almost all engineers L5 maxed out thats reasonable imho. The only one that caught me out was the unlocks for permits and rare goods as I mentioned above as the rest I had pretty much had checked off like the travel 5000ly etc.

Yeah you and EVERY other NPC in the galaxy...what an EXCLUSIVE club.....pure crap that's what Engineers is ...pure unthought out, poorly implemented CRAP.

Nope the post is entirely accurate, that is the description the Devs themselves used. Maybe in a few different words. Your post is the incorrect one claiming a correct thing is incorrect. Stop me if I go too meta here and I'll just find a link to the livestream...

I vote we bring back the 2.1 cheating AI just for this guy. Lets give NPC's plasma accelerators with the fire rate of multi-cannons!

Anyway, final words here before I bow out of this otherwise nice thread - NPC's do use engineers. Just not for weapons atm because too many people whined about overpoweredness for those without horizons. Also how would you have done it. It's very easy to crap (see what I did there) on other peoples ideas with no proof or anything except your opinion without providing your own suggestions/reasoning.
