Engines max weight and fuel reserve?

Does the Fuel reserve on your ship count towards the max mass for engines? Trying to figure out what I cant and can't squeeze onto an exploration rig.

Yes. Check your current jump range, then fly in SC for half an hour, then check again. You'll be able to jump a fraction of a ly further.

Does it count towards when the engines can't run anymore because of being overweighted? Or can you let the fuel reserve go over the max mass as long as the rest of the mass does not?

I may be falsely assuming engines stop working when the weight goes over the maximum. Or is it a matter of not being able to fit them?

Depends on what you mean by "engines", FSD or thrusters.

You can fit any smaller FSD to a ship. Just don't expect to jump very far with smaller FSD. :)
Folks used to fit 1A or 1D FSDs to combat ships to reduce mass and thus increase normal space agility & speed.

IIRC thrusters have mass limit, so you can't fit arbitrarily small thrusters to a ship.
