General / Off-Topic English is a language full of hidden gems

We should also thank the 'vikings' for bringing the Cod to our attention, as they were trading it quite widely from the 7th century. Also as English is a 'young' and modern language; being based on an amalgamation of Germanic (Anglo-Saxon) and French (after the Norman Invasion of 1066) mixed with the native british celtic, it does indeed have a robust and wide pool to draw from, which is what explains it's comparative richness.

To go from Chaucer (late 1300's) to Shakespeare (late 1500's), you can really feel the emergence of the wonderful language we all know and love (well except for maybe the French? It must confuse the heck of them that it is pretty strong full of 'frenchisms' ;) ). And as a modern language it just works so well for many things (say vs my mothers tongue of welsh!). Versatile, rich, robust, mostly logical and sensible and evolving, got to love it really :)

Being married to a Swede, I oftern forget just how many sayings are truly British. Just yesterday I said "good oh" then thinking I must have said it before had to explain it.

But when it comes to the OP I have always used the B word to describe anything and everything trashie. :D

Yeah, will 'it' survive this modern era? People did think Shakespeare was a 'trash talker' in his era mind you. And i wonder how much of the current day malady is purely down to letting our governments destroy our basic education system? Or is every young-un now just online and lol-ing all the time?

Hmmm i LoL from time to time! perplexing confliburaligies ;)

You should hear the flow of pure Anglo Saxon when I stub my toe.

Quite the opposite is true - more people are literate right now than all the other literate people before them combined. The internet and other text-media such as SMS and email have supported and created an explosion of literacy that is akin in impact to the invention of movable type itself.

You just happen to be more wedded to your own conventions than the real world is capable of supporting.
