Mostly posting to get rid of the annoying message about not posting enough.
Bought the game a week before launch, and spent the time learning as much as I could about how it all works. Bought VoiceAttack and configured that in the combat demo (using a mouse and keyboard as I had let my brother use my joystick as he was a Kickstarter backer and had been playing for a while).
So upon release I had a lot of decisions to make based on what I thought I knew and how I thought I'd play. Some fairly boring local trading around (but rarely in) my home system of LHS 3447 or whatever it was called, before I decided to sell my Eagle. The cash really helped start me on my way. I wasn't looking for combat, mining or exploration, so I maxed out the cargo hold of my Sidewinder at the expense of shields and discovery scanners etc, and set about more trading. I used some tools (mainly Thrudds) because I felt that 1300 years in the future tools like that would be fairly common. I don't consider it cheating. Especially as it's not always correct!
That got me a better FSD and a fuel scoop (the scoop is the best purchase I've made so far) and decided to go further a field. Rare trading. Okay, so I have to go 140Ly, and that's a lot of jumps, but at 6 tonnes a load and 13Ly jump distances it wasn't too bad. I think I did about 6 or 7 runs and managed to earn enough to get a Cobra. That's the ship I wanted. And I'm not sure I'll ever want a better one really. A few more rare trading runs to buy some better stuff and I'm pretty happy at the moment. Lots of D spec stuff (it's the lightest, which is good for jump distances).
Am now trying out other things more, although I intend to return to Rares soon. So I've bought a kill warrant scanner, an Interdictor, a wake scanner and some decent lasers (I can't be bothered with ammunition!) and I've been merrily bounty hunting, both via USS and interdictions. I've killed some clean NPCs in anarchy space just to say I've done it. I've explored an entire unmapped system with my basic discovery scanner (took ages, but not sure if I'll bother saving up for better scanners). A
I haven't died yet. A few near misses with optimistic docking speeds, but most ships are fairly easy prey. Except the anaconda I tried to take on. I DID get his shields offline, but by then I was down to 37% hull so I ran away (top boost speed is 408, so I can scamper off from most things). And being a humble Cobra the repairs were only about 8kCr. I dread to think what repairs are in bigger ships like Anacondas. Gulp.
So the only things I haven't done are mining (none at all) or joining the conflict zones. But I intend to. For mining I'll probably get a second ship kitted out for it, but that's not in my immediate plans.
My current project is to get a Sol permit. I thought the Mercenary edition came with it, but I don't have one and I'd like to. I don't even want to visit Sol, but I want to be allowed to if I choose to. Working out how to get missions (and find the loot they ask for) isn't obvious. And I'm still trying to find the third mission. Sure it'll turn up soon.
Not had many bugs. Disappearing docking bay numbers. Trading seems to be fine. Bounty hunting seems to be fine. Both can easily be money makers. Not quite sure why everyone thinks it's all broken. What would I like? A bit more variety in the missions. A few less pointless USS's (funeral directors must earn a fortune). And I'd like a teeny bit more "life" in the game. Stations are very static and all the same. But I'm sure that'll improve in time; I like that rather than being "finished" and left to grow old, it's got a framework release that can and will be built on.
Maybe VoiceAttack could be integrated a bit more - would be nice if they talked to each other, as the conditions approach in VA gets horribly confused if you do stuff manually occasionally. And I'd like to be able to plot routes that don't get forgotten as soon as I target something else. Erm. Push to talk for voice comes. Maybe more npc interaction via comms.
Looking forward to some of the patches so that the galaxy map trading data bears some resemblance to what is actually there. But overall I think I'd like it all to be a bit harder. Not more obscure, or less profits, just a bit harder. Interdictions are too easy to evade. But if you manage to get to a station then you know you're probably safe until you supercruise to your destination. Jumping between systems is risk free.
But then I've only played for 5 days or so, and there's a whole galaxy of challenges I've not yet found. Can't wait for more.
