What exactly is so special about mechanical keyboards?

They seem to be treated as the holy grail of gaming equipment, but I don't get it.

What do they have that my £10 Microsoft Special keyboard doesn't?

So would you guys say it's worth it for Elite Dangerous?

I think they are, the more sensible version of my post is that the the mechanics make it clear when you've hit a key...and when you've hit two or more*.

I'd suggest that, if you can, you pop into a Pc World and have a feel of one; keyboards are very subjective, my all-time fav was a £10 cheapo from PC World.

As always, try before yo buy but imo they're worth the expense.

*Yes, sometimes I hit my keyboard.

Cheers, I'll see if I can get to one.

I much prefer the mechanical one on my main PC for typing to the chiclet one on my laptop. It feels better. That is all.

ETA - if you can find one try an IBM Model M. THAT's a keyboard.

Although they are louder than non-mechanical , some cherry switches are quieter (and feel different) than others. My QPAD MK-85 has Cherry Red Switches, these are quieter than Cherry Blue or Green for example.

There is a good web page that goes through the various aspects of Mechanical Keyboards here: http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/mechanical-keyboard-guide , i recommend you take a look.

And, as previously mentioned , go and try one if you can, to see which one you prefer (if at all) .
