Newcomer / Intro Enter Key, Rebind.

This is kind of a Question, Suggestion. I've been bumming around Elite D. for about a month now. All open world all in the bubble. I've yet to have reason to chat with a single soul.
but for reasons that totally escape me, Enter is hardwired to chat. Even if I change it for a given gaming session. Next session its on chat again.

So is there a way to permenently change the chat key to something else. Like CTRL-F12 or F13 just to get it out of the way. Ideally I would like to make it a 2nd spacebar, because like all windows users I have a ton of muscle memory that says Enter= Do it. And I would love to be able to make enter a 2nd Do It command. I'm not asking for anyone who does chat to loose that, but give us that do not, or just do not have that oppertunity the option of removing a real annoyance. Just a lil quality of life thing. IMHO BB.

I don't remember if you can rebind this key, but if you can, the DIY method would be to mark the bindings file as read-only in your OS.

F10 is screenshot too. It can be bound and what you say + screenshot. Once I found 120 Gb of the pictures when suddenly went out of space.
Not good for me as my mouse has 1 button mapped to F10 for all other MMOs :/

Ty root I do have some other customizations I should protect, and never thought of that, DOU!
No worries, I'm a bit passionate about modding games and this is a common practise to keep various files intact :)

I would check the file after every update just to ensure that the game client update didn't put a new version of the file in the folder.

Various apps used with Elite can intercept the screenshots and convert them on the fly to a name format of your choice and to a more compact file format again of your choice, you can also choose the directory.
Elite Dangerous Market Connector (EDMC) does it via a plug-in.
Elite Dangerous Discovery (EDD) has it in built in the full sized version I don’t know about the lite version.
There are no doubt others.
So F10 would still be bound to screenshots but they wouldn’t be in drive busting .BMP format anymore.

So cool too know, TyVM for sharing that.

Yes, problem is, I don't want screenshot at all :D It does a lag + SSD use. That time I had weapon group switch on that ...imagine how often it was used.

Ok, F10 (and Alt-F10) is hardwired in the game to trigger a screenshot.
I could think of one way to circumvent this, not sure whether it works, though:
  • assign whatever crazy combo you like to the function you want to be triggered by the physical F10 key
  • use AutoHotKey (or similar) to grab the F10 and send out your crazy combo instead
  • for completeness (if you ever want to do a screenshot), assign a crazy combo to trigger F10 through AHK
Of course - unless you stop that AHK script after playing ED, any other program that uses F10 for something will also get served thecrazy combo, unless you can encapsulate alöl that by checking whether ED is running (or even if it has the focus).

Let another program like nVidia Shadow Play intercept the keystroke and do something with it. Maybe you can assign it to something harmless.

OK I'm going to have to ask - what do other MMO's want you to use F10 for (I don't play any)?

I happily allow EDD to convert my F10 presses in Elite and I have even changed the Steam screenshot key to F10 for consistency in those things I play (whereas flavours of MSFS are much more customisable).

Maybe a change of those MMO assignments from F10 would be a better long-term solution with your mouse-button situation?

I have mouse which can be programmed on Windows. I use Linux. So 1st thing I did in shop I uploaded binding to F10. This story lasts for the 3rd mouse already (same model). I don't really recall how it started. I guess some MMO had F1-F12 slots, so lower numbers were on hand and high numbers I put on mouse. All my games are configured to use F10 for often used skill now.
