On the kickstart thread, there are repeated requests for more £20 tiers. This seems to be borderline necesarry, with up to 100 free slots appearing over the past week as people slowly upgrade.
I was thinking how it might be possible to draw in some extra backers without too much risk of reducing the overall pledge level, and without dissapointing the existing early-bird tier holders. Something that appeals to the new-to-elite crowd, who maybe would prefer to wait 15 months and see the reviews rather than pledge £30 for a game that they only have a passing interest in.
I know there is a strong desire to avoid a pay-to-play model (which I find a showstopper in mobile games) but so long as it is open, and up-front this might both help to draw in new backers, and help to justify the current £30 basic game price.
Thoughts so far were probably below the £20 level (£18 is just under $30), upgradable to the basic game for £15 (i.e. a £15 game credit), and maybe open 2000 slots at this level.
Restrictions would be something like core systems only (enough to play, but limiting for missions or some career choices), or limited to one ship. Less attractive options would be a time limited access (since that is probably the audience need for this tier)
Probably needs more market experience to judge quite how to pitch this, but it should be possible to make something which doesn't have too much impact on the existing pledge flow whilst also opening up an un-tapped audience. It needs to be thought through in time for the last 24 hours at least where there will be a lot of passing page-views from folks who are very undecided and are unlikely to jump in at a £30 tier (irrespective of where their final pledge ends)
