Epic Betelgeuse Trip!

I decided to take a trip to Betelgeuse. It was worth the trip. I jumped into the system, and there was Betelgeuse. To be honest, at first it didn't seem like anything special. I decided to explore the system, and that's when it got awesome.

Yeah, I visited it too, and was amazed by the sights. Especially the charred planet close to the behemoth.

Curiosity killed the cat, I guess...

Its the only star where you can scoop fuel from while going 60c :D
People were disappointed by it, while I think they did a pretty good job trying to get the scale of things across.

Just arrived there myself, took me 3 hours from populated space but was stopping and scanning on the way. There are some massive systems in the neighbourhood - found one with 58 astronomical objects (there were no asteroids) and another with about 40 so they took a bit of scanning. The scale of Betelgeuse is immense, even from 20,000 ls away it looks big. Have some screenshots but don't have time to upload now - will do it later.

That's quite a sight! Good trip too.
I've just got back into inhabited space after an exploration trip to the Pleides Nebula. Got some nice screen shots of it too. Scanned lots of systems and I've just sold the data. Got 750k for it... there are quicker ways of earning credits, but it was a fun trip.
Now to get back to some trading....

Haven't been there but I'm a little dissapointed. Surely an oversight but I was expecting there to be a habitable "small planet somewhere in the vicinity" ;)

Dropping out of warp at the star in the rift is a sight to Behold :) Also, whilst not as big as Betelgeuse, on the fringe of populated space enroute to Pleades are two giant stars called HYADUM and HYADUM II. The first star has a ringed planet orbiting extremely close, flying through the asteroid field with the giant in the background is an awe inspiring experiance

That little dot on the right side of the center screen?

haha. that's really nice. took some time to find the planet :)

while the initial drop in to supergiants is a bit underwhelming because of the relative distance, when you check out those systems and read up on some numbers, they can be quite impressive.

i highly recommand going to VY canis majoris the 1832ly trip was worth it for me. plus Wezen is just slightly off the path as well as a few other supergaints :D

Indeed, that's a pretty big mistake. Betelgeuse is a lot more massive star than the Sun.

It's not necessarily a mistake. Stars going through the red giant (or supergiant) stage have lost a significant amount of matter through numerous coronal mass ejections before entering this stage. The "relative" size is directly attributed to the triple alpha process which is when the star stops fusing hydrogen and starts on fusing helium instead... essentially it inflates like a balloon while keeping most of the remaining mass.
