Engineers Erm... No.

Some things you really can't appreciate, nor understand, until you've done it. For me, this has been Engineers.

I'm not on beta but read many, many threads on the time required to acquire a mod. Words such as "grind" and "RNG" used in every other post, it seemed. And apparently fish were a key factor. ;) But nonetheless, I finally bought Horizons on 2.1 launch day and decided "You know what? I'm going give this a shot. Perhaps some detractors are just a bit too jaded to enjoy it." $35 isn't that much money, after all.

So on Saturday afternoon, I began my first Quest: an upgrade to my missles.

Step One was to reconfigure half my FAS to be able to reach the target system... add a scanner, add a fuel scoop, upgrade the FSD. The journey was around 200 LY for me, and took longer than I'd like. But finally, here I am in the system. Step Two: the engineer requires an introduction from the Mafia. The Mafia requires a Cordial rating with them. A Cordial rating requires several missions.

Half of the missions were simple: deliver some legal stuff to the system next door. Opps - time to reconfigure the ship again. So let's drop another module I really like having (hull buff), and add a cargo hold. Great, now I can haul stuff. Mission completed, and I'm 1 pixel closer to Cordial.

The other half of the missions consisted of "blow up something at an Outpost." One in particular was nearly impossible; too many turrets and skimmers firing on my SRV. Gravity so low I felt like I was running around inside a bounceyball. After 4 attempts, I finally abandoned the mission. Opps: my rep just dropped with the Mafia. Now I'll have to do another extra mission or 2 to get back the rep I just lost.

Hour 7-8 of this Quest ... Finally, I'm Cordial! Engineer sends an Invite! Ok, what do I need to start working with her... 200 landminds. Wait, what? 200 landminds? $700,000 worth of landmines?

Sigh. Ok, I'll drop $700K on your bribe. Wait... opps... well, crap. My ship can't hold 200 landmines. In fact, I can't hold more than 7T of anything, because I've got 9T of "Mod Material" in my cargo hold. Damnit. Ok, sell another Hull Buff, add some more cargo room. Still not even close to 200T... this will take several trips to haul 200 landmines.

Now it's starting to feel a bit less "Questy" and a bit more "Seriously...?"

At this point, I finally did something I normally avoid - I used the forum/youtube/internet for research. I don't like using info outside-the-game for things like trade routes, etc... I prefer to learn things in the game. But I needed to see how much more of this gameplay I was in for. So I found a video made by GluttonyFang on Liz Ryder, and Eng Mods list on http://inara.cz/. Took a look at the blueprints for Missle upgrades.

Wait a second - I've got 150+ materials, and 9T of Mod cargo - but I don't even have HALF of the items I'm going to need. Nickel, Osmium, Vanadium, etc... I've never even SEEN those floating around as loot. And wait - there are ~50 different materials in the Universe? I've only seen around 10-12. You mean I may not ever even NEED most of this 150 stuff I'm carrying? But I will apparently need stuff I've never seen? Which stuff should I start dumping? What if I DID need it?

Ok, double-check inara.cz. Oh. So I can mine for them. Opps - here we go again, my ship isn't configured for mining. I suppose my best alternative is to store my FAS, buy a T6 (or whatever), configure for mining and hope when I start shooting space rocks, some Nickel will fly out of it. I suspect this will take another 2-4 hours. Perhaps longer, because I've never done mining before and have no clue how to do it efficiently.

And once I have 2T of Nickel and some other material (that ironically, I don't have among the 150 things I already have) - I get to spin the upgrade wheel.

Once.

You. Are. Fraking. Kidding. Me.

I can see where this Quest is heading, and it appears to require 50-70 hours of my life, minimum. And depending on the Wheel of Unfortunate, I may not even get what I was questing for in the first place.

So. Erm... No. Screw this. I'm heading back to my home system, and going back to interdicting random CMDRs for some uninvited PvP.

Finally - at the risk of having my post moderated, I'll add: Frontier unquestionably needs to take a hard look at the decisions being made by the Game Designer(s). Features and Gameplay such as Engineers didn't just "happen" - they were coding decisions that were imagined, debated, decided upon and implemented. Some of these decisions are frankly unbelievable, if the goal was "quality, enjoyable gaming."

This is not an issue, such as the overpowered weapons bug we faced in the first 4 days - that was a BUG, not ever intended, and quickly corrected. This... system... of Engineers is not a bug. It is MEANT to be this way. Which in itself speaks volumes about the judgment of the Game Designer(s) that created Engineers.

Get it together, Frontier.

I use FAS as well! All you have to do is get 1 or two mining lasers into your medium weapon Slots and get a 2a limpet Controller! voila mining materials becomes easy!
I am already rank 4 with Todd McQuinn just using an FAS for all the different Tasks! real not an issue.

But I love that I have to Change outfots all the time and that it introduced me to mining and for combat the limpet collectors are super fun too to collect valuable stuff after I blow up high ranked ships! only grain I have is the storage of onely 600... I ran out of storage a few days ago and now have to Keep deciding what to dump all the time which is crazy!

Other than that i love the FAS more than ever for all the variety it now offers gameplay wise.. before 2.1 all i did was pvp and some res which was boaring with the old ai.. now I do so many differen tthings and thats just fun!!!

I'm pointing out that if I'm required to drive to the hardware store every time I need a another single nail - I'll just keep renting an apartment, as that type of house construction sounds like madness.

I save up till I can afford a bunch of nails before I go. That's the way I'm playing anyway.

Good luck doing that with the arbitrary $6 limit on your wallet and inability to increase it ;)

Definitely agree with OP's post, really hope that they address the major issues with engineers.

The current design heavily stacks the deck against you in this regard.

You can save up your 600 nails, but then you'll find you have no room for your tools, lumber, paint, concrete, or pipes. So you'll be right back where you started, sourcing one 2x4 board at the time - assuming your truck can carry lumber in the first place - heck, assuming you have a TRUCK, and not a passenger car. Perhaps you'll have a house in 20 years at this rate (Or you might not. At random, the building inspector may say "I don't like your building materials. Start over.")... but certainly no contractor would ever hire you to build houses in such an inefficient manner.

yeah ignore my Reply caus eyou dont know how to deal with People who actually enjoy playing the game and are glad there are more Things to do now! pffft

So a couple of things. Blowing up X at a base are super easy and cheesy. Take your ship, put some missiles on it and fire them at whatever target you must destroy. Most of them are shoot the power generator which is helpfully colored differently so its easy to spot.

Some of these numbers are excessive 200 cigars/land mines/etc seem a bit over the top, how many landmines do you need to do whatever it is you are doing? really? I haven't bothered with that guy actually, still working on the basic 4. Heck haven't even crafted a lvl 3 anything yet. But not too bothered by it honestly, been having a blast running missions, which the OP pretty much hates doing I guess. If you spend some time figuring out which states generate which materials its not that hard to find what you need for a particular pull at the slot machine.

Let me rephrase:

I buy ED, start in a sidewinder, look at coriolis to see that a federal corvette costs a lot of credits and in addition requires federal rank to work for.
So to get a corvette i have to WORK for countless hours and do ship progression, missions, smuggling, mining, trading etc? you have to be kidding me frontier. get your stuff together.

In other words, you're mad at FD for giving you a choice to have some modifications on your pvp ship, but you'll have to PLAY through the expansion to earn some? Of course you would rather have them delivered at your door for some robigo credits.

actually as you should know People that dont like Things raise their voices on Forums while hardly anyone who likes something even Comes to Forums to talk about it!

The whiney guys are by FAR the minority! Since th eupdate steam is a godd indicator of how many People it brought back as the user numbers tripled... personally I see it with my friends who like me all came back for this update cause it is by far th ebest Thing that happend to elite finally some Upgrades worth playing for cause they are not handed on a silver spoon and have a well desired randomness to the high end Upgrades!

I'll happily reply to your post, DreadLord.

Some businessmen enjoy going to one of those weird clubs in London, and dressing up like a baby, dog, or a pony. And then having women treat them like one.

They have every right to do so, and if they enjoy it - well, whatever. It's not something I enjoy. Quite frankly, I think it points to a mental problem... but I'm a "live and let live" sort of person, and if someone enjoys dressing up and acting like a dog, it has no negative impact on my life.

However, if I was to take a job at a law office and then told "By the way: on Fridays, you need to dress up like a dog wearing a diaper. It's fun, we all do it." - I would plainly state that this was not the career for me.

So - if you're enjoying 2.1, keep enjoying it.

The funny part? Lots of people actually enjoy this.

I don't think so, every friend of mine who plays ED hate it, the grand majority of forumers hate it, and every person i spoke with hates it.

Mechanic to find materials -> RNG
Mechanic to upgrade our ships -> RNG
Mechanic to secondary positive/negative -> RNG
Mechanic to get an experimental -> RNG (yet)

No storage, No in game database, No way to hunt for a specific material, ships that can't handle well internals are screw'd, everybody needs cargo + collectors, Todd is very hard to rank with...

I don't mind positive feedback and such, i don't mind the grind, but random grind + random result + unhelping side mechanic = Bad gameplay.

Why fight the game so hard? Your materials go with you when you change ships. You don't need to bring your FAS anywhere until you have the mats to upgrade. Use the appropriate ship for gather each mat. Then all you need is to replace a SINGLE compartment with a fuelscoop to get there.

Ya screw those silver platter guys, I prefer my dishes be made of poop.

This post PERFECTLY DESCRIBES Frontier's modus operandi

This is EXACTLY what they want.

The funny part? Lots of people actually enjoy this. A very small minority that gets all the attention enjoys this. Rest of humanity... not really.

Ya technically 5% is a lot of people. An even smaller amount of people love to watch their business crumble and become game developers.

I like ED as much as the next guy but the number hasn't tripled, though it went up. Also most ED users don't use Steam so it is not really a good indication of the player base.

That said, I would like FD to revisit the RNG so there is less overlap among the tier so it feels less like 'gambling'. That's all, no bronze, silver, golden spoons and pudding needed.

nobody Forces you to upgrade modules! So your example with the jobwhere you have to do so DOES NOT fit!

You are in a sandbox free to do what you like! if you dont like to Play to get Upgrades than dont do it! simple! ist a choice! complaining about a game having coices you personally dont like is really childish dont you thinK? ist like compaining the candy store has too many candies...

so i suggest stick to the candy you like best!
