Errors Upgrading Suits and Weapons

Yesterday was an update day many servers run badly for a while after an update until everything gets back in sync.

I asked a question, that's not an answer. If I gave that out as an excuse in any my jobs in telemetry, telecom, automotive, defense industry I would probably be frog marched off site

See the question: Has anyone experienced a fail error upgrading a suit or weapon in the shop? Answer is? Yes or no is better

🤷‍♀️

Can't get anything upgraded as well.
Idk.. Had a blue item in my storage, and ditched it because I saw other posts talking about that, but it still doesn't work.
Tried different stations, logged in/out, waited 6 hours, tried again. Still the same

F**k me I'm a legend.
I found [EDIT] 1 cause for [/EDIT] this bug and a workaround [EDIT] that work in this scenario [/EDIT]

In your folder, where your ED journal is located : (ie. C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous)
Look for the file : ShipLocker.json (and Backpack.json)
Open it with an editor that support JSON for readability (ex. Notepad++)
This file will contain a list of all goods/assets/components that you possess, one on each line.
Ex :
JSON:
], "Components":[
{ "Name":"graphene", "OwnerID":0, "Count":14 },
{ "Name":"carbonfibreplating", "Name_Localised":"Carbon Fibre Plating", "OwnerID":4645283, "Count":14 },
{ "Name":"circuitboard", "Name_Localised":"Circuit Board", "OwnerID":0, "Count":3 },

Items that you "own" will have a "OwnerID:0"
Everything that DOES NOT say "0" for the OwnerID are the problematic items.

WORKAROUND :

  1. Team up with a friend
  2. Go to a planet
  3. Land somewhere (can be a Planetary Spatioport, so you can easily reach a Pioneer supplies vendor after)
  4. Deploy with SRV
  5. Meet with you friend
  6. Disembark on-foot
  7. Transfer the items you identified in the file into your backpack from your SRV (in my example file : Carbon Fibre Plating)
  8. Drop the items
  9. Have your teammate pick them up, and then drop them back to you
  10. Pick-up your items
  11. Check your file (if you opened it with Notepad++, it will ask to reload), and you should now see that "OwnerID:0"
  12. Rinse & repeat for every items that "you don't own"
  13. Board SRV, get back to ship, disembark and go to Pioneer supplies to upgrade.

Please let me know if that works for you , I will submit a detailed report to FDev with these findings

do you really expect help after a response like that?

Not OP

I understand your point of view.
But please consider that this issue has been driving some people mad for weeks/months/years (found reports dating from 2021) and everytime it's dismissed by others (incl. FDev) as "I don't have the issue myself / can't reproduce, so you're probably the problem" (aka. You're a moron)...
So at some point, it is becoming really frustrating for some people.

Anyway, I hope the workaround and pinpoint of where the issue lies will be able to help people in the same situation and that FDev will look into it now.
This game is amazing - now some people that were having this issue will get to enjoy it again with fewer headaches (finger crossed🤞)

Except when everything is showing as "OwnerID": 0 ... like it is for me.

I upgraded 3 weapons before the error, 2 suits and 1 weapon after the error, but the weapon causing the error still causes the error.

Do you have any “mission” blue items in your inventory? Some people reported that it might cause the issue as well.

You can still try the method above with only the items that are required for the weapon you’re trying to upgrade.
It will clear any “invisible” status they are tagged with.

No mission items. And I'd upgraded another Karma weapon before I got the error on the L-6, and again after I got the error on the L-6 - which requires the exact same materials.
