Howdy all; first post here. Still need to do another to reach my "minimum" limit so I can edit my profile, etc.
Anyway, I had an interesting idea whilst being blown up by a player pirate the other day. I think it would be neat if, eventually, we could equip an Escape Pod Module (or some such) in maybe a utility slot; or an internal slot.
If your ship would be about to explode, you could activate the escape pod (or, maybe down the road, when the player is able to move about his ship; be able to actually run to the internally equipped module) -- I think this would be an awesome cinematic experience, as your ship is blowing up, to be able to activate this, coupled with some cool animations and whatnot.
I figure it would work something like this: your ship would eject a cargo-capsule-sized "ship" with the player on board at a high velocity in a given direction. Upon launch of the Escape Pod, the module would also use flare/chaff to try and confuse any missiles or turrets locked on to it. The player would be able to activate a few modules, to keep his heat signature (and radar signature) low.
When the player in the pod feels like it would be safe (perhaps by toggling on the Pod's sensors to take a peek at surrounding space, to verify if it's safe or not), he could activate a distress beacon and hope to be "rescued" by another player. Ejecting yourself would have the advantage of saving all of your bounty redemptions and exploration redemptions. Perhaps once you safely get returned to the station, you would have a further discount on rebuying your ship.
And you could have it so that the player that "Rescues" you could get a bonus too, for successfully returning you to a nearby station. Perhaps the BBS could have a "Rescue Stranded Player" Mission category, or some-such. The same could also be applied to players who have run out of fuel, too.
Just a random thought.
Thanks for your time,
