I have had this though in my head ever since I picked up some escape pods with my SRV back when 2.1 was out: why not do something more with them instead of treating them as another piece of cargo (along with some tea tens of thousands light years from the inhabited bubble
).
I am sure there will be family and friends who would like to seem their loved ones return safely; equally, there will be enemies that will make sure he/she stay undiscovered and died. Perhaps certain authorities will like to get their hands on them as well.
May be there is an opportunity there to do more.
I am also having this strange thought about personal scenario plays, for example, you are sold as a slave in a young age and you desperately wants to become free again. In order to do so you need either to cause enough trouble in your home system that they are afraid of you or help their oppositions to take control of their base or even buy your way out of slavery.
Another one is an employee of a trading company (you get a free ship and don't pay insurance yourself), a career path in system authorities, etc.
Crazy stuff I know, probably because I just had a cup of coffee.
