could you introduce escape PODs for crew members. when your ship is destroyed instead of your crew member being killed, put them in an escape POD.
the POD will last for X number of days... who knows what X is, should it be a month or a week.... to be decided, maybe by have different classes of escape pod modules.
new modules to be created allowing extended periods of life support time for your escape pods. or, if you don't want to add new modules, determine the length based on the class of you ships life support.
if you go out, scoop up the POD within the POD's life support time, you save and get your crew member back. failure to find and collect the pod in time means they die.
you may want to add a launch escape pod button, without this they die instantly. escape PODs only come into play if you have hit this button before you got destroyed.
