Funny, I encountered my first one today as well, sadly it was also already discovered. Still, interesting lensing effects when you get close :)

The black hole in the screenshot was one of two in the system. The effects at the first were much less noticeable, as I approached it with the background mainly black. I was rather disappointed with it, but then with the next I thought to adjust my approach and yes, the effects were interesting. There was a whirlpool effect which varied as I adjusted the attitude of the ship. There were also what seemed to be small stars circulating the black hole at times (looked just like fireflies!).

Try getting as close as you can. Get close enough that you drop out of SC (keep below 1000 K/s).

The effect is quite disorientating .

I did that with the first one (unintentionally!) I could only get to 24.8km when there was a message, something like 'No Body Zone' or something. I then finished up with an escape vector and overheating when trying to move on. As I mentioned this was all against a mainly black background and the effects were less than spectacular. When I find another I will experiment more ... ;)
