Escaping the event horizon..

So, as I understand it.. when you die you get ejected automatically from your ship into an escape pod and transported back to the last space port you were at.. (unless you are playing ironman mode but lets ignore that mode for the moment..)

So.. what happens if you die from flying into, or too close to a BLACK HOLE? As I'm sure you all know, get too close to a black hole and you pass into the point of no return, where nothing can escape, not even light.. so I'm sure this would also include your escape pod.. :S

Don't tell me that a small pod will be capable of escaping the gravitational force of a black hole, while your main ship gets destroyed by it! :D

I am looking forward to exploring all sorts of strange things like this, especially when the planetary landing expansion is out so I can finally see what Jupiter's surface is like underneath all that gas! May need to buy a few more escape pods! ;)

That is certainly an interesting question. Obviously the answer is no, an escape pod could not make it out of an event horizon. But knowing a little bit about general relativity myself, I believe your ship would have been destroyed long before crossing the horizon due to the enormous gravitational gradient your ship would experience. But I like your thinking...

As for Jupiter's surface, there ain't one! Just clouds, nothing but clouds that get more and more dense until your ship would be crushed by the pressure!

Not approach you a black hole. Because it would be finished for you and you could not play any more ED. Your ship would be sucked up, then your capsule of rescue, then your computer, then your screen, then your desk with all that there is above, then your furniture, your house, your neighborhood ...

Why not? Just add a small warp drive in that pod (as it should be, otherwise there is no fast return for you anyways) and everything will be fine. ;)

If the black hole is large enough, you would not be torn apart.

I think that is different for a super-massive black hole isn't it. In theory you could survive entry into the event horizon and not be ripped apart by the gravity.

Personally I think you'd be toast way before you reached the event horizon.
Getting a probe onto the "surface" of Jupiter is hard enough without it being completely squished.

I love theoretical physics :D

This is the most important point in this thread. The escape pod has a faster than light drive, problem solved.

I will be throwing my self into the nearest black hole I can find during beta (for science!)

Simple answer is you don't die in the game so the escape pod will always rescue you, even in ironman mode you can live if you want, so assuming blackholes are in game then yes your pod will be able to escape it.

the death penalties were discussed at length before being settled on, the pod is a game item not a real one it can survive anything and transport you from anywhere to your last saved location without trouble.
