Newcomer / Intro Essential Combat Binds

I'm new and need a little help prioritizing binds. I'm using dual T1600m's and trying to figure out the most efficient key bind layout. So, what are the essential binds for combat?

So far these are the things I have bound:

*All directions of flight
*Primary/Secondary fire
*Cycle next fire group
*System/Engine/Weapon/Balance (on my right four way hat)
*Target and next target
*FA off
*Throttle 0%, 50%, up and down 10% increments (on my left hat)
*Boost

That's all I got for my combat binds. What am I missing? Maybe sub targets?

I'm thinking of doing a shift key, but had to use script to get the sticks to work. Going to have to read up on how to script that exactly.

Thanks!

Next and Previous sub target.
Thrust Up, Down, Left and right. Assuming those weren't in the all directions of flight binding.
Target next system on route. For when it all goes wrong and you want to Hi-wake out.
Chaff.
Fire Heat sink. I think that is now mappable.
Reverse thrust.

Cool, Thanks!

Just got this game about a week ago and it's a lot to take in. I was thinking that Chaff and Heat sink would be a good idea. I'm starting to think a shift key is a good idea.

Not sure on the T1600's buttons but my stick is the X52 and I have some very odd bindings.

Throttle has boost, a hat dedicated to next/previous target and next/previous highest threat. You can use highest thread to see who is interdicting you. Finally throttle has target ahead.

Stick has fire buttons, FSD, switch fire group and retract hardpoints on the stick itself as well as 2 hats I use for all menu's. Then on the 6 variable keys on the base of the stick I have pips and countermeasures (chaff/heat sink/shield cell bank).

In between the two I have a keyboard which I bind my directional thrusters, flight assist toggle, landing gear, silent running and all those less used keys that are still important to. One thing I've gotten used to in an odd way is setting my throttle to blue zone then having my left hand on directional thrusters on the keyboard (w/s/a/d/shift/ctrl) so if I let go I return to the blue zone. It's not the best setup but it works for me.

Anyway this post isn't that helpful in truth as I'm an odd cookie that works in an odd way but hopefully you have an idea of what you may/may not want to bind. :)

I appreciate the help.

I've been playing for a week and its starting to come together. The goal is not have to take my hands off the sticks while in combat. I have a keyboard too in the middle of the sticks and have been just using that for like you said landing gear and less important/time sensitive task. Part of the problem is not knowing how important some stuff is, but that will come in time.

What is essential for targeting? Target and next target or would highest threat be more important than next target? So far I have target and next target, but maybe I should switch next to highest threat. I'm going to add in a shift key or two and was going to put the sub targeting under that.

"Target ahead" and "highest threat" are the two you're going to use the most.
If you want to "flick through targets" you can always use the Contacts tab on the left-hand panel.

Take your time with it, there's no hurry. Look, I played since early betas and I am STILL tweaking the bindings, now and then. :)

Highest threat is often overlooked. It's great for cycling people attacking you and people interdicting you. It's not great for picking an individual out that is not attacking you as it'll gloss right over all them. It also works very well as a "deselect target" button when there is nobody actively shooting you.
I find cycle targets useful but often it's better to just have the contacts pane up as sometimes there are so many targets even with cycle fwd/back you'll get lost in the stew.

Yeah targeting modules is useful especially when taking on bigger ships so you can hit that powerplant first or thrusters to disable them. I have that on keyboard at the moment.

I agree hands on stick would be good. I'm due a complete re-bind in Jan/Feb when I get oculus or Vive and can't see my keyboard anymore :p

There are three types of ships targeting:
  • Cycle next/prev targets - general targeting of everything in range. Needed in RES (and non-combat situations).
  • Cycle next/prev enemy ships - targets "red" ships only. Needed in conflict zones. Less important in RES unless you're attacking wings (not recommended for newbies).
  • Select highest threat - targets only one thing according to certain priorities, basically (1) missiles, (2) ships that are shooting at you, (3) other enemy ships.

Personally I use Target, and Cycle Next Target all day long, and a little bit of Cycle Prev Target. I can get by without Highest Threat. But this is a personal thing.

I imagine the TM software would allow you to do something like:

Short press: Cycle Next Target
Shift press: Cycle Prev Target
Long press: Highest Threat

Isn't one of the Thrustmaster HOTAS setups compatible with BX1?

Not that I know of? Just being able to use a keyboard with this game would be enough for me. A keyboard works with the Xbox when it comes to typing messages, and even when using the Galaxy Map to search, but you can't bind any controls to the keys.

Annoying.

Heh, all that equality of platforms once we all have W10, right? :/
Sorry, it must be really annoying, yes.
