General / Off-Topic EU Article 13. Time to panic?

I guess this might be considered "political" in the sense that it's something that's been created by politicians but the topic, itself, isn't actually political (IMO) so I hope discussion of this can be permitted.

In a nutshell, it seems the EU has come up with a new policy intended to deal with copyright theft but which also "accidentally" negates the concept of "fair use" which, on the most basic level, means that things like Youtube creators and alternative media sites won't be able to reference material from 3rd-parties without consent and, more insidiously, means that news coverage is likely to be more limited to MSM sources which can obtain permission to use 3rd-party material without relying on "fair use" to do so.

Apparently, the EU will be voting on whether or not this should become law or not in a couple of weeks so you might want to contact your MEP if you're not happy about it although, frankly, I suspect you'll be wasting your time.

Seems like a bad thing to me. [where is it]

Totally agreed.

I've already tweeted & emailed a bunch of UK MEPs asking them to oppose it.

You might have mentioned that Elite streamers & video-makers will also be hit HARD by this insane legislation, to emphasise just why this is an issue which is OK to discuss here.

The 'action site' is https://saveyourinternet.eu

If it says off the political side of discussion I don't mind.

If it does go to political discussion it will get closed.

Freedom is something you have to fight to the death for all the time. It is not something that automatically just "is there" suddenly.

GET YOUR BOOTS ON AND LETS GO! FIGHT!

Do not believe everything you are told.
Don't walk into the prison cell factory!
They will close the bars behind you and then you are no longer free.

This isn't another 'story' in the vein of Brussels forcing straight cucumbers and bendy banana’s on us is it? (those turned out to be fake news btw).

I did find some more on it here, in not too alarmist language, and it provides an actual link to the real directive (for legal type minds to read over):

Actual article 13 from the EU:

There does seem to be some shades of grey that could be an issue, so i wonder if the lobby work to address those concerns has been taken on board?

Zak that is the tip of the iceberg. Just wait until they have consolidated power then the real micro management of our lives begin.

The narrative of race will be thrown towards those who oppose it. Anyway we are crossing the line. Necro out!

This law is basically about protecting intellectual property and the abundant theft that is going on right now. It is not about streamers or creators referencing 3rd party material, but more about all these sites, online newspapers, blogs, magazines, etc, that just copy someone else's work and present it as their own (seems to almost be the norm these days..).

It is also about putting a limit to what big companies can do with all the personal (and sometimes creative content) people upload in their social media accounts.
