EU to fine countries 'hundreds of millions of pounds' for refusing to take refugees

The European Commission will impose fines of hundreds of millions of pounds on countries that do not take in refugees.

Jean-Claude Junker is tomorrow expected to unveil plans to impose a penalty of around €250,000 euros per rejected refugee, in a bid to salvage his botched migration quota scheme.

The European Commission is expected to propose on Wednesday that an emergency scheme to distribute 160,000 people around the bloc following the massive influx last summer be put on a permanent footing, with a quota system of allocations that kick in if there is another vast wave of migrants that overwhelms a country.

The new plan comes despite the temporary scheme having proved a flop. It was approved against the wishes of Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary in September, and so far, 1,441 people have been moved.

“Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results,” remarked one diplomat.

The European Union extorts countries when they don't follow the orders of the eurocrats in ther ivory tower at Brussels.

That seems....insane, so they pretend they know the limitations and issues that the individual countries have on this issue, better then the country itself and so fine them?

I thought EU was built on the countries that are a part of it.
I would have thought EU was about supporting its pillars, the countries, rather then chopping them to bits?

It's a bizarre situation. I feel for the people living in crap countries but you can't force people to be charitable in a commercial world. Either it's a hard-nosed business world or we're all communist hippies. We can't be both; the realities of economics don't allow it.

This is an ramp and attack on sovereign countries. Every country have a sacred law to want or not want take refugees. Punishing them by a crazy $$ will only cause collapse of EU.
Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech, Ostereich will not pay. And IF we not pay, then what? UE will not give us donations? WE are netto payers in UE, so WE can not pay into UE, not UE to US.
If UE will try force these countries then they just exit from EU. We will have PLexit, CZexit and other exits, and IF EU try to bring 'democracy' to us by a tanks, then those countries make own union, mid-sea union and they will defend themselves. Thats how it looks.

The article refers to the proposed changes to the Dublin Agreement for who is responsible for dealing with refugees.

Under the current Dublin Agreement, the country which the refugee first arrives in is responsible. In the recent case this has been Italy, Greece Cyprus and some eastern European countries.

The UK, due to geography, receives virtually none of the refugees from the middle east.

Obviously this is a bit unfair for countries that happen to be getting a lot of refugees.

The proposal was for the responsibility to be shared amongst the EU members with a "contribution" (fine) of E250,000 per refugee that a country refused (and another country had to take on).

Now this is just a proposal that some countries (Italy, Greece etc) think is great and others (one that don't have refugees at the moment) think is bad.

It will have to be voted on before the proposal becomes law or is rejected.

And here's the vital bit of information.

The proposed amendment above would not apply to the UK.

No fines, no quota, no change in our ability to dsend any refugee that did manage to get to the UK can be sent back. Not that many refugees do get to the UK because the UK is not part of the passport free area (Schengen) so the UK controls it's borders with document checks etc. Any person arriving without correct documents is sent back at the airline/ferry's cost so they tend to stop them before they get on the plane/ferry/train.

So really a bit of a scare story.

And border countries also can just not take them. They should seal their borders, and there EU could help. Internat security is most important.
